There are plenty of semi auto .22s out there, but not many put this much thought into the details. The Savage A22 TimberLite Thumbhole takes the proven A22 straight blowback action and dresses it up with a carbon fiber wrapped 18 inch barrel and an ambidextrous thumbhole stock finished in gray with black spiderwebbing. The result is a rimfire that tips the scales around 5.3 pounds, swings fast on squirrels, and settles nicely on a bench rest when you want to stack groups.
Accuracy starts with the barrel and trigger, and Savage nailed both here. The carbon fiber wrapped barrel sheds weight while keeping things stiff, and it comes threaded 1/2×28 with a cap so you can add a muzzle device whenever you like. The receiver uses the same thread-in headspacing found on Savage centerfires, which is a big part of why these rifles shoot tighter than their price class suggests. Then there is the AccuTrigger, which lets you dial the pull to your liking for a crisp, clean break without a trip to a gunsmith.
A 20 MOA Picatinny rail comes mounted on the receiver, so adding a scope is quick and you get extra elevation built in if you enjoy stretching a .22 LR out past normal plinking distances. Two sling studs are already in place too, one for a sling and a spot up front if you want to run a bipod.
Feeding comes from a flush 10 round rotary magazine that keeps the profile slim and cycles reliably with just about any standard velocity or high velocity .22 LR load. The thumbhole grip puts your hand at a natural angle that steadies offhand shots, and since the stock is cut ambidextrous, left handed folks are not an afterthought. Whether it becomes your small game rifle, a trainer for new shooters in the family, or the gun that eats bricks of ammo on Saturday mornings, this one earns its spot in the safe.
Yes. The 18 inch carbon fiber wrapped barrel comes threaded in the standard 1/2×28 pattern, which fits the vast majority of rimfire suppressors and muzzle devices. A thread protector cap is included, so the muzzle stays clean when you are running it bare.
You can. It comes with Savage's AccuTrigger, which is user adjustable so you can set the pull weight to your preference at home with the included tool style adjustment. It breaks clean and crisp, which makes a real difference when you are trying to shrink groups with a rimfire.
There are no iron sights on this model, but it ships with a 20 MOA Picatinny rail already mounted on the receiver. That means most scopes and red dots bolt right on with standard rings or mounts, and the built in cant gives you extra elevation for longer rimfire shots.
The thumbhole stock is cut ambidextrous, so lefties can get a comfortable, repeatable grip on it. The action itself ejects to the right like most semi auto rimfires, but that rarely bothers left handed users in practice. It is one of the more southpaw friendly thumbhole rifles in this class.
