Finding a sporting clays gun that fits a smaller-framed shooter usually means settling for a stripped-down field gun or paying a gunsmith to cut a stock. The Savage 555 Sporting Compact solves that problem right out of the box. It takes the same formula as the full-size 555 Sporting and scales it down with 26 inch barrels and a shorter 13.5 inch length of pull, so youth shooters and adults with shorter arms get a gun that mounts naturally instead of one they have to grow into.
The 555 Sporting Compact wears an engraved aluminum alloy receiver that keeps overall weight low, with a steel insert reinforcing the breech face where the pressure lives. The chrome-lined carbon steel barrels are ported to tame muzzle jump between shots, and both chambers handle 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells. Up top, a raised ventilated rib carries a mid-bead and a red fiber optic front sight, giving you a clean, easy reference for tracking crossers and rising birds alike.
The oiled Turkish walnut stock is the real story here. An adjustable comb lets you dial in cheek weld and eye alignment, which matters a lot when the same gun might get passed between a growing kid and a parent. Pair that with the five included extended choke tubes, from Cylinder all the way up to Full, and you can set this gun up for skeet one weekend and trap the next.
A single selective mechanical trigger, tang-mounted safety, and manual extractor keep the controls simple and familiar. It is a straightforward, well-thought-out over/under that gives newer and smaller shooters a proper fit at a price that leaves room in the budget for shells and range time.
It is built for youth shooters and smaller-framed adults, with a 13.5 inch length of pull and 26 inch barrels that make it quicker to mount and swing than a full-size sporting gun. The adjustable comb lets you fine-tune cheek weld as a young shooter grows, so the gun stays useful for years instead of one season.
This model uses a manual extractor. When you break the action open, the extractor lifts the hulls enough for you to pluck them out by hand. Plenty of clays shooters prefer this setup since it keeps empties in your hand instead of on the ground, which makes reloaders happy too.
The 3 inch chambers accept both 2-3/4 and 3 inch 12 gauge shells. For clays, trap, and skeet work, standard 2-3/4 inch target loads are the way to go, and the ported barrels help keep the muzzle settled for faster second shots. The chrome-lined bores also make cleanup easier after a long day at the range.
It ships with five extended choke tubes: Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Full. That covers everything from close skeet targets to longer trap and sporting clays presentations. The extended design also makes swapping chokes quick, often without needing a wrench to get them started.
