Straight-wall cartridges have opened up a lot of deer country to rifle hunters, and the 350 Legend has become the go-to round for it. Mild recoil, plenty of punch inside 200 yards, and affordable ammo make it an easy cartridge to like. Savage put it in a package that makes just as much sense: the Axis 2 XP pairs a compact 18 inch barrel with a factory-mounted, boresighted 3-9x40mm scope, so you can hit the range, dial in your zero, and be ready for opening day without hunting down rings and bases.
The redesigned Axis 2 carries some genuinely useful upgrades over the original. The gray synthetic stock has improved ergonomics with enhanced texturing and a pistol grip that settles naturally into your hands, and the reshaped bolt handle is easier to run with cold fingers or gloves on. Underneath it all you get the stuff Savage built its reputation on: a button-rifled carbon steel barrel, thread-in headspacing for consistent accuracy, and the user-adjustable AccuTrigger, which lets you tune your pull weight to a clean, crisp break without a trip to the gunsmith.
The 18 inch matte black barrel keeps the whole rifle short and quick to shoulder in a blind or treestand, and the muzzle comes threaded 5/8×24 from the factory. That's a nice touch on a rifle in this class, since the 350 Legend suppresses beautifully if you want to go that route later. Feeding comes from a detachable 4-round box magazine for 4+1 capacity, a two-position safety keeps operation simple, and the receiver is drilled and tapped if you ever decide to swap optics down the road.
For a first deer rifle, a straight-wall-zone whitetail setup, or a knockaround truck gun that still shoots straight, this package covers all the bases. Everything you need to get shooting is on the rifle when you open the box, and the bones are good enough to keep it in the rotation for years.
The 3-9x40mm scope comes mounted and boresighted from the factory, which gets you on paper quickly. You'll still want a range session to fine-tune your zero with the specific ammo you plan to hunt with. Plan on a box of shells and a solid rest, and you'll be dialed in fast.
Yes, the 18 inch barrel comes threaded in the common 5/8×24 pattern, so most 30 caliber and larger suppressors and brakes will spin right on. The 350 Legend is a favorite for suppressed hunting since it runs quiet with the right loads. A thread protector keeps the muzzle covered when you're running it bare.
It is. This rifle uses Savage's AccuTrigger, which lets you adjust the pull weight yourself with the included tool, no gunsmith needed. It breaks clean and crisp, and the integrated blade design helps prevent the rifle from firing unless the trigger is pulled deliberately.
The 350 Legend shines as a deer cartridge inside about 200 yards, and it's also a solid choice for hogs and similar-sized game. It delivers good energy on target with noticeably less recoil than most traditional deer rounds, which makes it a great fit for newer hunters and younger family members. Ammo is widely available and reasonably priced compared to other hunting cartridges.
