The Axis XP has been the go-to first deer rifle recommendation behind gun counters for years, and Savage's redesign made a good thing better. This .308 Win version pairs a 22 inch button-rifled carbon steel barrel with a factory-mounted, boresighted 3-9×40 scope, so the package that comes out of the box is genuinely ready for the range. Savage reworked the synthetic stock with better texturing and ambidextrous palm swells on the grip, which makes a real difference with cold or wet hands. The bolt handle got a sleeker, more ergonomic shape that runs smoother when you are working the action from the shoulder. Underneath it all, the same fundamentals that built the Axis reputation are still here: thread-in headspacing and a precision button-rifled barrel that punches well above what you would expect at this level. The adjustable AccuTrigger lets you tune the pull to your liking for a clean, consistent break without a trip to the gunsmith.
Chambering matters, and .308 Win is about as practical as it gets. Ammo is on the shelf everywhere, recoil is manageable in a 7.6 pound rifle, and it has more than enough punch for whitetail, hogs, black bear, and elk at reasonable distances. The 1:10 twist stabilizes the full range of common bullet weights, so you can shoot budget 150 grain soft points at the range and step up to premium hunting loads in the fall without any drama.
The rifle feeds from a 4-round detachable box magazine, carries a two-position tang safety that is easy to reach with your thumb, and wears an all-black matte finish that shrugs off rough weather. At 42.5 inches overall, it handles well in a treestand or a truck rack. For a hunter who wants a dependable bolt gun with glass already on top, this setup covers the bases without wasting your money.
The 3-9×40 scope comes mounted and boresighted from the factory, which gets you on paper at the range. Boresighting is not a true zero though, so plan on shooting a few groups and fine-tuning the turrets with your hunting ammo before the season. Most folks are dialed in within a box of shells.
It is one of the most common recommendations for exactly that. You get a reliable Savage bolt action, an adjustable AccuTrigger, and a scope already mounted, so there is nothing extra to buy before your first range trip.
