There's something about a wood-stocked bolt gun that just feels right in the deer stand, and the Savage Axis 2 XP Hardwood delivers that look without giving up any of the modern touches that make Savage rifles shoot so well for the money. This is the redesigned Gen II version of the Axis, chambered in .243 Winchester with a 22-inch matte black sporter barrel. The .243 is one of the best all-around cartridges going, light on recoil, flat shooting, and plenty capable on whitetail, pronghorn, hogs, and coyotes. That makes this setup a favorite for youth hunters and anyone who wants one rifle that covers varmints through deer.
The hardwood stock got real attention in the redesign, with laser-cut stippling on the pistol grip and forend that gives you a solid hold even with cold or wet hands. The reshaped bolt handle is easier to run with gloves on, and the button-rifled barrel with thread-in headspacing is where the accuracy comes from. Owners routinely report groups in the 1 to 1.5 MOA range with factory ammo, which is more than enough precision to fill a tag. The user-adjustable AccuTrigger lets you dial the pull anywhere from about 2.5 to 6 pounds without a trip to the gunsmith, and it breaks clean with none of the mushy feel you get on a lot of budget rifles.
Savage mounts and bore-sights a 3-9×40 scope at the factory, with fully multi-coated lenses and tool-free windage and elevation adjustments. That magnification range is the classic hunting sweet spot, wide enough at 3x for close timber shots and enough reach at 9x for beanfield distances. Feeding comes from a detachable 4-round box magazine, and the whole package runs 42.5 inches overall at around 7.8 pounds scoped, so it carries comfortably on long walks. The 3-9×40 scope comes mounted and bore-sighted from the factory, which gets you on paper right away.
