For years the 17 HMR was a bolt gun cartridge, plain and simple. Standard blowback actions just could not handle the pressure of magnum rimfire safely. Savage solved that problem with the A17 and its delayed-blowback action, which locks up long enough to let pressures drop before the bolt opens. The result is a semi-auto that cycles 17 HMR loads dependably, giving you fast follow-up shots on prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and other small critters that rarely sit still for a second chance.
This version of the A17 wears a 22 inch button-rifled heavy carbon steel barrel with a 1:9 twist. The extra barrel mass soaks up heat during long varmint sessions and settles the rifle nicely over a bag or bipod, which is exactly where a flat-shooting round like the 17 HMR does its best work. Up top, the receiver comes drilled and tapped with two Weaver-style bases included, so mounting a scope is quick and painless. There are no iron sights on this rifle, and with the reach this cartridge has, glass is the way to go anyway.
The hard chrome bolt with an oversized handle rides in a case-hardened receiver, a durable combination that also gives the rifle some classic character. Savage's user-adjustable AccuTrigger lets you dial the pull weight down to your liking with the included tool, delivering the kind of crisp, clean break that makes a rimfire genuinely fun to shoot well. Feeding comes from a 10-round rotary magazine that sits flush and keeps the lines of the black synthetic sporter stock clean. Textured panels on the grip and forend give you a sure hold in gloves or damp weather.
At 42 inches overall, the A17 Heavy Barrel carries fine in the field but really shines from a bench or truck hood. If you have been wanting semi-auto speed with the flat trajectory and fizz of the 17 HMR, this is the rifle that made it possible in the first place.
No iron sights or scope are included on this model. The receiver is drilled and tapped, and Savage ships it with two Weaver-style bases and mounting screws, so all you need to add is rings and your optic of choice. Given how flat the 17 HMR shoots, a scope in the 3-9x range or higher is a natural fit.
That is the whole point of the design. The delayed-blowback action was engineered specifically to handle 17 HMR pressures, so it runs standard loads from the major ammo makers. CCI even developed its A17 line of ammunition tuned for this rifle, which is a great choice if you want to squeeze out every bit of velocity and consistency.
