You give up a touch of velocity compared to a longer barrel, but the 30-06 has power to spare, and thread-in headspacing helps keep accuracy consistent shot after shot.
The updated Axis stock is a real step up from the original. It features a more vertical pistol grip with ambidextrous palm swells and aggressive texturing where your hands land, so it stays put with gloves on or in the rain. The swept-back bolt handle is easier to find and run when your fingers are cold and a buck is standing broadside. Yes, it ships with a 3-9×40 scope mounted and boresighted at the factory. Boresighting gets you on paper, but you will still want to fine-tune your zero at the range with the ammo you plan to hunt with. Most folks are dialed in with a box or two of shells.
For practical hunting distances, absolutely. You lose a bit of velocity compared to a 22 inch barrel, but the 30-06 has plenty of energy in reserve for deer, hogs, black bear, and even elk at reasonable ranges. In return you get a rifle that is noticeably handier in blinds, stands, and thick brush.

No, the AccuTrigger is found on the Axis 2 models a step up in the lineup. The Axis XP uses Savage's standard trigger, which is perfectly serviceable for hunting work. If an adjustable trigger matters to you, the Axis 2 XP is worth a look, but plenty of hunters run the XP as-is and never think twice.
