The 270 Winchester is a classic all-around big game cartridge. It shines on whitetail, mule deer, and pronghorn, and with heavier well-constructed bullets it can handle black bear and elk at reasonable distances. Ammo is widely available in bullet weights from about 130 to 150 grains.
You give up a little muzzle velocity compared to a 22 inch tube, but for typical hunting distances the difference on game is minimal. What you gain is a handier, quicker-pointing rifle that is easier to manage in blinds, brush, and vehicles. For most hunters it is a worthwhile trade.
