This is the redesigned version of Savage's workhorse package rifle, built with better ergonomics, a reshaped bolt handle that runs smoothly even with cold or gloved hands, and a tough synthetic stock that shrugs off the weather. The 20 inch barrel keeps the whole setup quick-pointing and easy to maneuver in a blind, a treestand, or thick timber, which is exactly where a deer rifle spends most of its life.
Savage builds accuracy into this rifle the same way it does with its higher-end models. The barrel is button rifled with a 1:8 twist that stabilizes the long, sleek bullets 6.5 Creedmoor is known for, and thread-in headspacing means each barrel is fitted to its action with real precision instead of loose factory tolerances. Feeding comes from a detachable box magazine, and the tang-mounted safety sits right under your thumb where it belongs. Sling studs come standard, so adding a sling or bipod takes minutes.
The XP part of the name means the work of mounting glass is already done. A 3-9×40 scope comes installed and boresighted from the factory, so your first range trip is about fine-tuning zero, not fussing with rings and bases. That 3-9x magnification range covers everything from close shots in cover to reaching across a bean field.
This rifle makes a lot of sense for a first deer gun, a loaner for hunting camp, or a truck rifle you will not baby. The mild recoil of 6.5 Creedmoor makes practice pleasant, which means more trigger time and better shooting when it counts. Yes, it ships with a 3-9x40mm scope that is mounted and boresighted at the factory. Boresighting gets you on paper, but you will still want to fine-tune your zero at the range with the ammo you plan to hunt with. Plan on a box or two of ammo to get it dialed in exactly where you want it.
For hunting distances, absolutely. You give up a modest amount of velocity compared to a 22 inch barrel, but 6.5 Creedmoor was designed to run efficiently and still delivers plenty of energy for deer-sized game well past typical hunting ranges. In return you get a shorter, handier rifle that is easier to carry and maneuver in tight spots.
The biggest difference is the trigger. The Axis II XP adds Savage's user-adjustable AccuTrigger, while the standard Axis XP uses a fixed factory trigger. Both share the same button-rifled barrel, thread-in headspacing, synthetic stock, and factory-mounted scope package, so the core accuracy features are the same.
The 6.5 Creedmoor is a proven performer on whitetail, mule deer, antelope, and hogs, and plenty of hunters have taken elk with well-placed shots and quality bullets. Its flat trajectory and mild recoil make it a great all-around choice, especially for newer hunters or anyone who is recoil sensitive.
