Plenty of AR-15s get bolted together from off-the-shelf parts. The San Tan Tactical STT-15 takes a different route. It starts life as a matched pillar billet set, machined from 7075-T6 aerospace aluminum and hand finished so the upper and lower fit together like they grew that way. San Tan machines the bore, receiver extension face, barrel nut threads, and barrel extension surfaces in a single operation, which keeps everything concentric with the barrel and pays off downrange in repeatable accuracy. This black anodized 16 inch model is the clean, no-nonsense version of the lineup, and it comes ready to feed from a 30 round magazine.
The barrel is San Tan's own, cut from 41V50 vanadium steel with a 1:7 twist that stabilizes everything from light varmint loads to heavy 77 grain match ammo. The muzzle wears standard 1/2-28 threads, and the barrel is dimpled for proper gas block alignment. Inside, you get San Tan's enhanced bolt carrier group in 9310 case hardened steel, MPI and HPT tested, with three gas ports to bleed off excess pressure when running a suppressor. The trigger is a genuine CMC 3.5 lb single stage flat bow, a drop-in unit with a crisp break that most factory rifles can only dream about.
Lefties get the full experience here. The STT-15 lower is fully ambidextrous, and the ambi charging handle keeps operation smooth from either side. Three QD sling points are built into the lower, with two more on the Midwest Industries combat rail, so sling setups are simple no matter how you like to carry.
That Midwest Industries handguard gives you a full-length Picatinny top rail with M-LOK slots all around for lights, grips, and whatever else your setup calls for. Add in the rifle-length gas system for a soft, smooth recoil impulse, and the STT-15 makes long range days easy on the shoulder. This is American manufacturing done right, and it shows every time you send rounds downrange.
Yes. The 16 inch barrel comes with standard 1/2-28 muzzle threads, so it accepts most 5.56 muzzle devices and suppressor mounts. The enhanced bolt carrier group also has three gas ports designed to bleed off the extra gas that comes with suppressed shooting, which helps keep the rifle running clean and comfortable with a can attached.
San Tan builds this rifle with the CMC 3.5 lb single stage flat bow trigger, a drop-in unit from the company that pioneered drop-in AR trigger groups. It breaks clean and light right out of the box, which is a big step up from the gritty mil-spec triggers found in most factory ARs. For most buyers, there is nothing to upgrade here.
It is one of the better options out there. The lower receiver is fully ambidextrous, and the rifle includes an ambi charging handle as well. Between that and the five total QD sling points on the lower and handguard, southpaws can set this rifle up without any workarounds.
The 1:7 twist is on the faster side, which means it handles heavier bullets very well, including 69 and 77 grain match loads. It also shoots common 55 and 62 grain range ammo just fine, so you are covered across the board. The rifle is chambered for both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO, so either will run safely.
