There's a reason the American Rimfire line keeps showing up at the range, on the trapline, and in the truck. It takes the accuracy features from Ruger's centerfire American Rifle and shrinks them into a .22 LR that's genuinely fun to shoot. This Compact model (8306) runs an 18-inch cold hammer-forged barrel with a satin blued finish, threaded 1/2"-28 with a factory thread protector already installed, so adding a suppressor or other muzzle device is as simple as spinning off a cap. The Power Bedding integral bedding block locks the receiver in place and free-floats the barrel, which is a big part of why these rifles group so well with ammo they like.
The black synthetic stock ships with two interchangeable short length-of-pull modules, one with a lower comb for the iron sights and one with a raised comb for shooting under a scope. Swapping them takes seconds, just remove the rear sling swivel stud and trade modules. With a 12.5-inch length of pull and a 5.3-pound weight, this is a great first bolt gun for a young or smaller-framed shooter, but plenty of adults pick it as a handy trainer or packable small game rifle too.
The Ruger Marksman Adjustable trigger breaks clean and can be tuned between roughly 3 and 5 pounds to suit your preference. Up top you get a Williams fiber optic front sight and an adjustable folding-leaf rear, and the receiver has a 3/8-inch rimfire dovetail machined in plus drilling and tapping for Weaver #12 bases when you're ready for glass. The 60-degree bolt throw clears low-mounted scopes without banging your knuckles, and the tang safety sits right under your thumb where it belongs. Best of all, the flush-fitting BX-1 10-round rotary magazine is the same one the 10/22 uses, so BX-15 and BX-25 mags drop right in. If you already own a 10/22, your magazine pile just got more useful.

The 18-inch barrel comes threaded 1/2"-28, which is the standard pattern for most rimfire suppressors and muzzle devices, and a thread protector is installed from the factory. A bolt-action .22 LR with subsonic ammo through a can is about as quiet as shooting gets.
It's one of the better options out there for that job. The 12.5-inch length of pull and 5.3-pound weight fit smaller frames well, and the tang safety and mild .22 LR recoil make it easy to learn on. The interchangeable stock modules also let you set the comb height for irons now and a scope later.
The receiver has a 3/8-inch rimfire dovetail machined right in, so standard rimfire rings clamp straight on. It's also drilled and tapped for Weaver #12 bases if you'd rather run a more secure crossbolt setup. Swap in the included high-comb stock module and you'll get a proper cheek weld behind the optic.
