The 7mm-08 Remington might be the most underrated deer cartridge out there, and this Ruger American Gen II is a great home for it. Mild recoil, flat trajectory, and plenty of punch for whitetail, mule deer, hogs, and even elk at reasonable distances. Ruger took the original American, which earned a reputation for out-of-the-box accuracy over the past decade, and gave it a serious round of upgrades based on what hunters asked for. The result is a rifle that feels far more refined than its price class suggests.
The 20-inch medium-contour barrel is cold hammer-forged with deep spiral fluting to shave weight, and it comes threaded 5/8×24 with a radial port muzzle brake installed from the factory. Between the brake and the soft-shooting 7mm-08, this thing is downright pleasant at the bench. The whole barreled action wears Gun Metal Gray Cerakote, so rain, snow, and sweaty truck gun racks are not a concern. Ruger's patented Power Bedding system free-floats the barrel for consistent accuracy, and the Marksman trigger adjusts from roughly 3 to 5 pounds so you can dial in a crisp break that suits you. The three-lug stainless bolt runs a short 70 degree throw with an oversized handle, and the three-position tang safety lets you cycle rounds with the safety on.
The Gray Splatter synthetic stock includes a removable length-of-pull spacer that adjusts fit from 12 to 13.75 inches, which makes this an easy rifle to share between family members or fit to a smaller-framed hunter. The removable comb riser lines your eye up nicely behind a scope, and the textured splatter finish grips well with cold or wet hands without chewing them up.
A one-piece Picatinny rail comes factory installed, so mounting an optic takes minutes. Feeding comes from a flush-fit 3-round AI-style magazine, and at 6.3 pounds bare, this rifle carries easily on long hikes into the timber. For a do-it-all bolt gun in a genuinely versatile chambering, this one is tough to beat.
The Gen II adds a full Cerakote finish on the barreled action, a spiral fluted and threaded barrel with a factory muzzle brake, a stainless steel bolt body with an oversized threaded handle, and a three-position tang safety that locks the bolt. The updated stock also gains a removable comb riser and length-of-pull spacer. It keeps the Power Bedding system and Marksman adjustable trigger that made the original popular.
No iron sights or scope are included, but Ruger installs a one-piece Picatinny rail at the factory. Just add rings and the optic of your choice and you're ready to zero. The removable comb riser in the stock helps get your eye lined up behind a scope comfortably.
It's one of the best. The 7mm-08 delivers ballistics similar to the .308 with noticeably less recoil, making it a favorite for whitetail, mule deer, antelope, and hogs. Paired with this rifle's factory muzzle brake, felt recoil is mild enough for newer hunters and smaller-framed folks without giving up effective range.
Yes. The barrel is threaded with the common 5/8×24 pattern, so the factory radial brake spins off and most .30 caliber and 7mm rated suppressors or other muzzle devices thread right on. Just keep a thread protector handy if you shoot with the muzzle bare.
