Straight-wall hunting has gone from niche to mainstream, and the .450 Bushmaster sits right at the top of the list for whitetail, hogs, and black bear inside 250 yards. The Ruger American Gen II gives that big thumper a proper home. The 20 inch cold hammer-forged barrel wears a Gun Metal Gray Cerakote finish and comes threaded 11/16×24 with a factory-installed radial port muzzle brake, which takes a real edge off the recoil this cartridge is known for. Ruger listened to a decade of feedback on the original American and it shows. The Gen II gets a stainless steel bolt body, a threaded bolt handle you can swap, and a three-position tang safety that locks the bolt closed while still letting you load and unload with the safety on. The Marksman Adjustable trigger breaks clean and can be set between 3 and 5 pounds, and the Power Bedding system free-floats the barrel for consistent accuracy. The gray splatter synthetic stock is more rigid than the first generation and genuinely adjustable. Pull the spacer and the length of pull drops from 13.75 inches down to 12, which is handy for younger hunters or anyone layered up in November. The removable comb riser lets you dial in cheek weld for a scope, and the soft rubber recoil pad is shaped to shoulder fast and soak up recoil as it compresses. The splatter texture gives solid grip in wet weather without chewing up your hands.
At 6.4 pounds bare and 41.25 inches overall, this rifle carries easily to a stand or rides well in a blind. It feeds from a flush single-stack magazine holding 3 rounds, which is all most straight-wall hunts ever call for. Simple, tough, and accurate is a good recipe, and this one follows it.
The .450 Bushmaster is a stout cartridge, but this rifle handles it better than most. The factory radial port muzzle brake bleeds off a good chunk of the push, and the soft rubber recoil pad is designed to compress progressively as it absorbs the hit. Most hunters find it very manageable from a standing or seated position, and it is far more pleasant than an unbraked .450.
No iron sights or scope are included, but Ruger installs a one-piece Picatinny scope base at the factory. That means you only need rings and your optic of choice to get it range ready. Most buyers pair it with a 2-7x or 3-9x hunting scope, and an LPVO works great for hog hunting.
Most hunters treat it as a 200 to 250 yard cartridge on deer-sized game. It hits extremely hard inside that window, with heavy 250 grain bullets that anchor whitetail, hogs, and black bear with authority. Past 200 yards the trajectory starts dropping quickly, so knowing your holdovers matters more than with flatter-shooting rounds.
