The .350 Legend has earned its spot as a favorite whitetail cartridge, and the Ruger American Gen II is one of the better homes for it. Ruger took the original American, a rifle that built its reputation on out-of-the-box accuracy, and gave it a real overhaul. The 20 inch medium contour barrel is cold hammer-forged with deep spiral fluting to trim weight, and it wears a tough Gun Metal Gray Cerakote finish that shrugs off wet mornings in the treestand. The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28 with a factory radial port brake installed, so you can run it as-is, swap in your favorite muzzle device, or spin on a suppressor. The gray splatter synthetic stock is a big step up from the first generation. Spacers in the buttstock let you adjust length of pull from 12 to 13.75 inches, which is handy if the rifle gets passed between you and a younger hunter. The splatter texture gives solid grip without chewing up your hands, and the soft rubber recoil pad has a rounded heel that shoulders quickly and compresses to soak up what little kick this cartridge produces.
The bolt is CNC machined from stainless steel with the familiar three-lug design and short 70 degree throw, giving plenty of clearance under a mounted scope. An oversized bolt handle makes cycling easy with cold or gloved hands. The Ruger Marksman trigger is user adjustable so you can dial in a clean, crisp pull, and the three-position tang safety lets you cycle the action with the safety engaged.
There are no iron sights, but a one-piece Picatinny scope base comes factory installed, so mounting an optic takes minutes. Add in the flush-fitting 5-round AR-style detachable magazine, steel sling swivel studs, and a trim 6.4 pound weight, and this rifle is set up right for deer season from day one.
