Ruger sold a mountain of first-generation American rifles for good reason, and the Gen II takes that same dependable platform and gives it the refresh people were asking for. This .308 Winchester model wears a 20 inch medium-contour, cold hammer-forged barrel with deep spiral fluting that trims weight at the muzzle and helps the rifle balance nicely in hand. The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24 and comes with a radial brake already installed, so you can shoot it as-is, or spin the brake off and add a suppressor without a trip to the gunsmith. The whole barreled action, brake included, is coated in Gun Metal Gray Cerakote, which shrugs off weather and wipes clean after a wet day in the stand.
The gray splatter-textured synthetic stock is one of the biggest improvements over the original. A removable comb riser gets your eye lined up behind a scope properly, and the length of pull adjusts from 12 to 13.75 inches with a simple spacer, so the same rifle can fit a full-grown hunter or a smaller-framed new shooter. The textured grip panels and grooved fore-end give you real purchase with cold or gloved hands, and the soft recoil pad takes the edge off .308 loads.
Underneath, you still get the stuff that made the American a tack driver on a budget: the Marksman adjustable trigger that tunes from 3 to 5 pounds, Ruger's Power Bedding system that free-floats the barrel, and a three-lug stainless bolt with a short 70 degree throw for quick cycling and plenty of scope clearance. New for Gen II is a three-position tang safety that locks the bolt closed but still lets you load and unload with the safety on. A one-piece Picatinny rail comes factory-installed, and the rifle feeds from a flush-fitting 3-round AI-pattern magazine.
At 6.2 pounds and 41.25 inches overall, this is a genuinely handy deer and hog rifle that still has the accuracy chops for punching steel at distance. Top it with glass, sight it in, and it's ready for opening day.
No iron sights or scope are included, but Ruger installs a one-piece Picatinny rail at the factory. Just add rings and the optic of your choice and you're ready to zero. The removable comb riser in the stock helps get your eye lined up with a scope properly.
