Description

The original Ruger American earned its reputation by punching well above its weight, and the Generation II takes that formula and cleans up just about everything folks asked for. This .223 Rem version wears a 20 inch medium-contour, cold hammer-forged barrel with deep spiral fluting that trims weight and helps the rifle balance nicely in the hands. The muzzle is threaded 1/2"-28 and ships with a radial port brake installed, so you can run it as-is, swap on your own muzzle device, or add a suppressor without a trip to the gunsmith. Ruger also went with AR-style magazines here, which is a genuinely useful touch since spares are cheap, everywhere, and you probably already own a few. One 10-round mag comes in the box.

What the Gen II Brings to the Table

The barreled action is coated in Gun Metal Gray Cerakote for real corrosion resistance, and it sits in the Gray Splatter Gen II synthetic stock. The splatter texture gives you solid grip in wet or cold conditions without chewing up your hands. A removable spacer lets you adjust length of pull from 13.75 inches down to 12, which makes it easy to fit smaller-framed shooters or bulky winter layers, and the installed comb riser lines your eye up nicely behind a scope. There are no iron sights, but a Picatinny scope base comes factory installed, so mounting glass takes minutes.

A Trigger and Action That Do Their Part

Under the hood you get Ruger's Marksman Adjustable trigger, tunable between roughly 3 and 5 pounds for a crisp, clean break, plus the Power Bedding system that free-floats the barrel for consistent accuracy. The three-lug bolt runs a short 70 degree throw for plenty of scope clearance, and the three-position tang safety locks the bolt while still letting you load and unload with the safety on.

Where the Ruger American Gen II Shines

With a 1:8 twist stabilizing everything from light varmint loads to heavier match bullets, this rifle is right at home shooting prairie dogs, coyotes, or steel at the range. At 6.5 pounds bare, it carries easily all day too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Ruger American Gen II come with a scope or iron sights?

No, this model ships without sights of any kind. It does come with a Picatinny scope base already installed on the receiver, so all you need are rings and your optic of choice. The removable comb riser on the stock helps you get proper eye alignment behind a scope.

What magazines does this rifle take?

It feeds from standard AR-style magazines, and one 10-round mag is included. That is a big practical advantage since AR-pattern mags are inexpensive and easy to find just about anywhere. Most quality metal and polymer AR magazines will run in it.

Can I put a suppressor on the Ruger American Gen II 223?

Yes, the muzzle is threaded 1/2"-28, which is the standard thread pitch for most .22 caliber centerfire suppressors and muzzle devices. Just remove the factory radial port brake and thread on your can. The 1:8 twist also handles the heavier subsonic-friendly bullets well.

Is the trigger adjustable on this rifle?

It is. The Ruger Marksman Adjustable trigger lets you set the pull weight between roughly 3 and 5 pounds to suit your preference. It breaks clean from the factory, and most owners find it plenty good for varmint work and range use without any aftermarket upgrades.
