The original Ruger American earned its reputation the old fashioned way, by putting rounds where hunters aimed them without draining the bank account. The Generation II builds on that foundation and fixes just about everything folks asked Ruger to improve. This .243 Winchester version wears a 20 inch cold hammer-forged barrel with deep spiral fluting that trims weight and looks sharp doing it. The muzzle comes threaded 5/8-24 with a radial port brake installed from the factory, so you can run the brake, swap in a suppressor, or cap it off and go.
The barreled action wears a Gun Metal Gray Cerakote finish that shrugs off rain, sweat, and truck-bed scuffs far better than traditional bluing. The bolt body is machined from stainless steel with a three-lug, 70 degree throw that clears mounted scopes with room to spare, and the oversized bolt handle is easy to run with gloves on. Ruger's Marksman Adjustable trigger lets you set the pull between 3 and 5 pounds, and the Power Bedding block system free-floats the barrel for consistent accuracy. The three-position tang safety is a genuinely useful upgrade too, locking the bolt when you want it locked while still letting you load and unload with the safety on.
The gray splatter-textured synthetic stock grips well without chewing up your hands, and it adjusts to fit. Pull the spacer and the length of pull drops from 13.75 inches down to 12, which makes this a great pick for younger or smaller-framed hunters growing into their first deer rifle. A removable comb riser lines your eye up properly behind a scope, and the soft rubber recoil pad takes the edge off what little kick the .243 delivers.
The .243 Winchester is about as versatile as short-action cartridges get, flat enough for coyotes and prairie dogs, plenty capable on whitetail and antelope. Paired with this rifle's light recoil, adjustable fit, and factory-installed Picatinny scope base, you have a do-it-all setup that works for seasoned hunters and first-timers alike. No iron sights or scope are included, but the receiver ships with a one-piece Picatinny scope base already installed from the factory. That means you just need rings and your optic of choice and you're ready to zero. The 70 degree bolt throw also gives you plenty of clearance for larger scope eyepieces.
Yes. The 20 inch barrel is threaded with the common 5/8-24 pattern, and the factory radial muzzle brake simply unscrews so you can attach a suppressor or another muzzle device. It's one of the more suppressor-friendly hunting rifles at this price point.
It's one of the better options out there for that. Removing the stock spacer shortens the length of pull from 13.75 inches down to 12, and the mild recoil of the .243 Winchester makes it comfortable for newer hunters. As they grow, the spacer goes back in and the rifle grows with them.
