It looks the part of a commemorative piece, but make no mistake, this is a full working Gen II underneath, not a safe queen.
The 20 inch cold hammer-forged barrel is spiral fluted to trim weight up front and comes threaded 5/8×24 with a radial port muzzle brake already installed, so felt recoil from the .308 stays mild. A one-piece Picatinny base is mounted from the factory, meaning you can drop a scope on and head to the range the same day. The Ruger Marksman trigger adjusts from roughly 3 to 5 pounds, the one-piece stainless bolt runs smooth with a 70 degree throw, and the three-position tang safety lets you cycle the action with the safety on. Feeding comes from a 3 round AI-style magazine, and the pattern gives you plenty of aftermarket options if you want more capacity later.
The Gen II stock is one of the biggest upgrades over the original American. Pull the included spacer and the length of pull adjusts from 13.75 inches down to 12, which is handy if the rifle gets shared with a smaller framed hunter or a new shooter in the family. The installed low comb lines your eye up nicely behind a magnified optic, the splatter texture grips well with wet gloves, and the soft rubber recoil pad shoulders easily and soaks up what the brake doesn't.
