Some guns try to do everything. The Rossi Tuffy keeps it simple and does a handful of jobs really well. This is a single shot .410 bore break action with an 18.5 inch smooth bore barrel and a 3 inch chamber, so it digests everything from light 2.5 inch shot loads for pests and snakes up to full 3 inch shells for small game. At 31 inches overall and around 47 ounces unloaded, it takes up almost no room in a truck cab, tractor, four wheeler rack, or camp kit, and you barely notice it on a long walk to check fence lines.
The polymer thumbhole stock is the part that makes this little Rossi stand out from the average single shot. The grip angle is comfortable for smaller hands, the short length of pull fits younger and smaller framed folks without a hitch, and molded-in shell holders keep spare rounds attached to the gun itself. Break it open, drop a shell in, close it, and you are ready. There is nothing to jam, nothing to babysit, and cleanup after a dusty day is about as quick as it gets with a firearm.
A lot of people pick up the Tuffy as a first shotgun, and it is easy to see why. The .410 is soft on the shoulder, the break action makes it obvious when the gun is loaded or clear, and the transfer bar mechanism means the hammer has to be deliberately cocked before anything happens. A brass bead up front keeps aiming simple. New shotgunners learn the fundamentals without flinching, and experienced hands get a knockaround gun they will not baby.
Pest control around the barn, snakes on the trail, squirrels and rabbits in season, or just a reliable piece to keep at the cabin, the Tuffy covers a lot of ground for a gun this small. It is the kind of shotgun that gets handed down, loaned out, and used hard, and it keeps working because there is so little that can go wrong.
Yes. The Tuffy has a 3 inch chamber, so it handles both 2.5 inch and 3 inch .410 shotshells. That gives you options from light shot loads for pests up to heavier payloads for small game.
It is one of the more popular picks for that job. The .410 bore has very mild recoil, the short length of pull fits smaller frames, and the break action makes it easy to see whether the gun is loaded. Loading one shell at a time also encourages new shooters to make each shot count.
Yes, the polymer thumbhole stock has integrated shell holders molded into it, so spare rounds stay on the gun. That is a handy feature for a single shot since reloads are always within reach.
The transfer bar sits between the hammer and firing pin and only lines up when the trigger is deliberately pulled with the hammer cocked. That means the gun will not fire from a bump or drop on the hammer. It is a simple, proven system common on break action firearms.
