There's something to be said for a gun that does one thing at a time and does it without fuss. The Rossi Tuffy Poly Survival is a single-shot break-action chambered to run both 3-inch .410 bore shotshells and .45 Colt through the same 16-inch rifled barrel. That combo covers a lot of ground in the woods. Load birdshot for squirrels and grouse, step up to a .410 slug or buckshot when you need more, or drop in a .45 Colt when you want real thump out of a rifle-length barrel. Two removable choke tubes make it work: a smooth bore tube for .45 Colt and a straight-rifled tube that keeps .410 patterns tight.
At right around 3.2 pounds and just under 31 inches overall, this thing barely registers when you're hauling it. Better yet, it takes down completely without tools, so it stows inside a backpack, behind a truck seat, or in a canoe dry bag without eating up space. The polymer receiver is molded around a steel trunnion, which keeps weight down while putting steel at the breech face and hinge where the stress lives. The textured thumbhole stock has a short length of pull that fits smaller-framed folks well, and it stores up to 8 spare shells, four per side, so your ammo travels with the gun.
The manual of arms here is about as basic as it gets: break it open with the right-side lever, drop in a round, cock the exposed hammer, and squeeze the bow-style trigger. A cross-bolt safety and transfer bar back you up, and the action won't open or close while the hammer is cocked. Up top you get a fixed front blade paired with a Picatinny rail that has a rear sight groove machined in, so you can shoot it as-is or mount a red dot for faster work.
