Description

There are plenty of rimfire pistols out there, but very few give you a real 1911 feel chambered in .22 Magnum. That is exactly what Rock Island built with the XT 22 Magnum. The all-steel frame and slide balance just like a Government-size 1911, so if you already run a full-size .45, everything about this pistol will feel familiar the second you pick it up. The controls sit right where they should, the extended beavertail lets you get a high grip, and the checkered rubber grips keep it planted through a full magazine.

What Makes the XT 22 Magnum Different

Adapting the 1911 platform to .22 WMR took some clever engineering, and Rock Island got it right with a delayed blowback action built around a pinned 5 inch barrel. The payoff is a pistol that shoots soft, runs a snappy little magnum cartridge, and holds 14 rounds in the magazine plus one in the chamber. The single action trigger breaks between 4 and 6 pounds from the factory, and both the hammer and trigger are skeletonized, with an adjustable overtravel stop on the trigger for a cleaner break. Dovetailed front and rear sights carry a low, snag-free profile that stays out of the way while still giving you a clean sight picture.

Shooting the Rock Island XT 22

At roughly 40 ounces, this pistol soaks up what little recoil the .22 Magnum produces, which makes long range sessions easy on the hands and great for newer pistol owners learning fundamentals on a full-size frame. It is accurate enough for serious target work at typical handgun distances, quick enough for steel and plinking, and the .22 WMR gives you noticeably more pop than a standard .22 LR for pest and varmint duty. The parkerized finish on the frame and slide is a working-gun coating that holds up to regular handling and range wear. Each pistol ships with one 14 round magazine, and it takes standard 1911 grip panels if you ever want to change up the look. For anyone who loves the 1911 but wants cheaper, softer shooting range time with some real velocity behind it, this one fills a slot almost nothing else does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Rock Island XT 22 Magnum a true 1911?

It keeps the classic 1911 layout, including the slide stop, magazine release, thumb safety, and grip safety, so it handles and feels like a Government-size 1911. Internally it uses a delayed blowback action designed specifically for the .22 WMR cartridge instead of the traditional tilting barrel lockup. The result is authentic 1911 ergonomics with an action built for the rimfire magnum.

What is the XT 22 Magnum best suited for?

It shines as a range and plinking pistol, and the .22 WMR carries enough extra velocity over .22 LR to handle small varmints and pests. The 40 ounce steel build and light-recoiling cartridge also make it a great trainer for anyone who carries or competes with a full-size 1911. The crisp 4 to 6 pound trigger helps with accurate target work too.

Does the XT 22 Magnum accept standard 1911 grips?

Yes, the frame accepts standard 1911 grip panels, so swapping the factory checkered rubber grips for wood or G10 is simple. Full wraparound style grips may not fit due to the frame design, so stick with standard panels. It is an easy way to personalize the pistol without any gunsmithing.

What ammo runs best in the Rock Island XT 22?

Like most rimfire semi-autos, it tends to run most reliably with quality 40 grain .22 WMR loads, and many owners report the smoothest feeding with round nose or FMJ style bullets. Wide open hollow points can be less consistent in some rimfire pistols, so it is worth testing a few brands to find what your particular gun likes. Armscor's own 40 grain .22 Magnum is a popular pairing.
