It runs a slanted three-chamber design paired with top and side porting, which redirects gas to counteract both recoil and that upward lifting tendency. The result is a rifle that stays settled through rapid strings, so your sights come right back to where they started and you're ready for the next shot instead of chasing the target.
This version is machined from 416R stainless steel and wears a bright silver finish that pairs nicely with a stainless barrel or any build where you want a little contrast. The comp measures 2.5 inches overall and weighs right around 3 ounces, so it adds control without hanging a bunch of extra weight off the muzzle. Rise cuts a recessed crown into the design too, which shields the barrel's crown and helps protect the accuracy you already paid for.
Threads are the standard 1/2-28 pattern, so it drops onto just about any 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington AR-15 barrel with a common thread pitch. Installation is straightforward with a crush washer or shim kit and a wrench, and Rise machined clean flats into the body to give your wrench something solid to grab. Folks who have run it tend to point out the quality of the machining and how noticeably it settles the rifle down.
Rise comes out of a background in oil and aerospace manufacturing, and they hold their parts to tight standards, so this is a compensator meant to hold up to real range time and hard use. The .223/5.56 RA-701 uses the standard 1/2-28 thread pattern, which is the common pitch on AR-15 barrels chambered in .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO. As long as your barrel has 1/2-28 threads and enough clearance for the 2.5 inch length, you're good to go. You'll want a crush washer or shim kit to time it properly.
Rise rates the RA-701 at up to 67 percent recoil reduction, and the slanted three-chamber design with top porting is what keeps the muzzle flat during fast strings. On a 5.56 AR that translates to a noticeably softer, flatter-feeling rifle that settles right back on target. Results vary a bit depending on your barrel length and load, but the difference is easy to feel.
It's a compensator, though it borrows from both worlds. The side ports work like a brake to pull down felt recoil while the top ports vent gas upward to fight muzzle rise, so you get the flat-shooting benefit of a comp with solid recoil control. The recessed crown also helps protect your barrel and preserve accuracy.
Like any effective compensator, the RA-701 redirects gas and blast out to the sides and up, so it does increase the concussion and volume felt by anyone standing beside you. That's simply the trade-off for the recoil and muzzle-rise control it provides. Ear protection is a must, and it's worth being mindful of your neighbors on a crowded firing line.
