The Rio W&T Blended shells pack a 1-1/8 ounce payload of #7.5 shot into standard 2-3/4 inch 12 gauge cases, designed to work across multiple shooting applications. This is the sweet spot payload that most competitive shooters and hunters prefer—enough pellets for a tight pattern without the excessive recoil of heavier magnum loads. The 1-1/8 oz load has been the go-to for experienced shooters for decades because it strikes the right balance between pellet count and recoil management.
The blended shot approach combines different pellet sizes in a single shell, which smooths out the performance envelope compared to single-size loads. This means you get slightly denser patterns than a straight #8, with better energy retention than running pure #9s. It's a shooter-friendly compromise that works from the hunting field to the clay course.
#7.5 shot has a long tradition for a reason. It's become the gold standard for dove hunters because each pellet carries enough weight to maintain velocity at practical ranges while the size allows for a good pellet count per shell. The same shells work well for upland game like quail and grouse, and they've proven themselves on the clay target course for trap and sporting clays competitors. Rio's Wing & Target line is specifically engineered for these crossover applications.
Rio shells use quality plastic hulls and reliable primers, backed by a company that's been manufacturing shotgun ammunition since 2002. They offer consistent performance at a price point that doesn't require taking out a second mortgage to hit the field or range.
The #7.5 pellets are slightly larger and heavier than #8, which means they carry more energy at longer ranges and break clays more decisively on distant targets. #8 provides more pellets per shell for denser patterns at closer ranges. Most hunters and sporting clays competitors go with #7.5 because it covers a wider effective distance range without much downside.
Yes. The 1-1/8 ounce payload with #7.5 shot is exactly what experienced dove hunters reach for. The pellet size maintains its velocity out to practical hunting distances, and the blended composition gives you forgiving patterns when you're shooting at fast-moving birds. This is a proven dove load.
These are standard 2-3/4 inch shells, so they'll chamber in any 12 gauge designed for that length. Always check your shotgun's manual to confirm it accepts 2-3/4 inch shells, especially with older or specialized firearms. Modern pump-action, semi-auto, and break-action shotguns handle them without issue.
Rio shells deliver solid, consistent performance at a significantly lower cost per round. The brand has built its reputation among budget-conscious hunters and competitors who value reliability over premium pricing. Plenty of experienced shooters run Rio for practice and field work, reserving expensive shells only when absolutely necessary.
