Rio Ammunition has built its reputation on making quality shotshells that won't break the bank, and the Texas Game Load lives up to that standard. These 12-gauge rounds pack 1-1/4 ounces of #6 lead shot moving at 1330 feet per second, which gives you the velocity needed to connect with doves and other upland birds across reasonable distances.
The real story here is that Rio manufactures its own components instead of sourcing from different suppliers. That in-house control means tighter quality standards from primer to propellant to shot. You get consistent ignition and uniform patterns shot after shot. The high brass construction is built for these higher-velocity loads, designed to handle the pressure and cycle reliably through most standard shotguns.
The #6 shot size and 1-1/4 oz payload hit the sweet spot for dove hunting. You get enough pellet density to form clean patterns without going so fine that you lose energy downrange. Whether you're stalking mourning doves or tackling faster white-wings, this load provides the balance between pattern spread and knockdown power that upland hunters rely on. Rio specifically engineered these shells with dove hunters in mind, and it shows in every aspect of the design.
Since 2002, Rio Ammunition has called Texas home. The company packs these shells in a special edition Texas-themed camo box that celebrates that connection. Beyond the distinctive packaging, you're getting ammunition manufactured to the same standards Rio applies across its entire line, backed by over 125 years of ammunition-making experience. The velocity, components, and performance are dialed in for the exact conditions dove hunters encounter.
Yes. The #6 shot and 1-1/4 oz payload work well for pheasant, quail, grouse, and other medium-sized upland birds. The 1330 fps velocity gives you the range and energy needed for hunting conditions where birds are at typical distances. Many hunters use this load for a variety of upland applications beyond just dove season.
The 1330 fps velocity puts these shells in the high-velocity category, which means faster target acquisition and flatter trajectories compared to standard velocity loads. This extra speed helps minimize lead time on fast-moving birds and extends your effective range, making it especially useful when doves are climbing or working the horizon.
High brass shells feature a taller brass base that's designed to handle higher pressure loads like this velocity rating. The extra brass provides added durability and consistent extraction, which is why you'll see them paired with hunting loads rather than light target rounds. For a load this fast and with this payload, high brass is the right choice.
Rio Texas Game Load shells will work in standard 12-gauge shotguns chambered for 2.75-inch shells. That covers the vast majority of hunting shotguns out there. However, always check your shotgun's manual to confirm it's rated for the chamber length and shell length. If you have any doubt, verify with the manufacturer.
