Retay built its name on shotguns, and the RA1522 marks the company's first swing at the rimfire AR market. The good news is they didn't phone it in. This is a blowback-operated .22 LR that looks, feels, and handles like a full-size AR, but feeds ammo you can buy by the bucket. At around 4.7 pounds, it's light enough for a kid's first range trip and fun enough that you'll want plenty of turns yourself.
This configuration wears an aluminum quad rail handguard with a continuous full-length Picatinny top rail, so mounting a red dot, scope, light, or sling swivel is about as simple as it gets. Flip-up front and rear sights come installed from the factory, meaning you can shoot it the day you bring it home without spending another dime on glass. The 16 inch barrel is threaded 1/2×28 with a thread protector, leaving the door open for a suppressor or muzzle device down the road, and the adjustable stock lets the rifle grow or shrink to fit different shooters in the family.
The real appeal here is trigger time. Rimfire ammo costs a fraction of centerfire, so you can run drills, work on fundamentals, or just burn through an afternoon of plinking without wincing at the register. Recoil and noise are minimal, which makes this an outstanding platform for introducing new folks to the AR layout before they step up to something bigger. It ships with a 10-round magazine featuring a follower tab that makes loading noticeably easier on the thumbs, and Retay states the rifle also accepts Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 magazines if you want spares. Between the accuracy, the familiar controls, and Retay's limited lifetime warranty, the RA1522 earns its spot as a do-it-all rimfire that pulls double duty as a serious training tool and a genuinely fun range gun.
The RA1522 uses Retay's proprietary magazines, offered in 10 and 25 round versions, and the included mag has a follower tab that takes the pain out of loading. Retay states that Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 magazines are also compatible with the rifle. Keep in mind the reverse isn't true, and CMMG-style rimfire mags do not fit.

It's one of the better use cases for this rifle. The controls, ergonomics, and adjustable stock mirror a centerfire AR, but the soft recoil and low noise of .22 LR make it far less intimidating for beginners. Ammo costs are a fraction of centerfire too, so new folks can get plenty of reps without a big range bill.
Absolutely. This version has a continuous full-length Picatinny top rail running from the receiver across the aluminum quad rail, so red dots, scopes, and magnifiers all mount easily. The included flip-up sights fold down out of the way, or they can co-witness with many red dots as a backup.
