Pump guns have been putting birds on the strap for over a century, and the Retay GPS XL is a fresh take on the formula that gets the details right. The XL in the name matters here, because this one is chambered for 3.5-inch magnums, so you can run everything from light 2.75-inch field loads up to heavy waterfowl and turkey payloads through the same gun. The 28-inch barrel is drilled from Bohler steel, chrome lined for weather and steel shot, and features a lengthened forcing cone that helps tighten up patterns and take a little sting out of stout loads.
Retay built this action around what they call the Geometric Glide Forend System, which shortens pump travel to roughly three inches. Combined with a dual slide rail and dual latch setup and a floating forearm design, the action runs smooth and quick without the bind or rattle you get from some budget pumps. Follow-up shots come fast, and the one-piece aluminum lower receiver keeps the overall weight down around 6.75 pounds, so it carries well on long walks to the blind. A cross-bolt safety and high visibility front blade sight round out the working parts, and there's a dovetail optics mount if you want to add a red dot for turkey season.
The synthetic stock and forend wear full Realtree Max-7 camo, a pattern built for marshes, flooded timber, and field edges. An included shim kit lets you adjust drop and cast so the gun fits you instead of the other way around, and the sculpted microcell recoil pad does real work when you step up to magnum shells. Integrated sling swivel mounts make adding a sling simple. Three MaraPro choke tubes in Cylinder, Modified, and Full come in the box, covering close decoying birds out to longer passing shots, and Retay backs the whole package with a 5-year limited warranty. For a do-it-all hunting pump with big-shell versatility, this one earns a hard look.
Yes, that's the main difference between the GPS and the GPS XL. The XL is chambered for 3.5-inch magnums and will also run 3-inch and 2.75-inch shells, making it a solid pick for heavy waterfowl and turkey loads as well as everyday field ammo. Capacity is 4+1 with 2.75-inch shells and 3+1 with longer shells.
Yes. The 28-inch barrel is drilled from Bohler steel and chrome lined, and the included MaraPro choke tubes are designed for modern nontoxic loads. As with any shotgun, stick with Modified or more open constrictions when running steel through it.
You can. The receiver includes a dovetail optics mount, which is handy if you want to run a red dot for turkey hunting. The high visibility front blade works fine on its own for wingshooting if you prefer to keep it simple.
It does. The GPS XL ships with a shim set that lets you tweak drop and cast at the stock, so you can fine-tune how the gun mounts and where it shoots relative to your point of aim. The 14.37-inch length of pull and microcell recoil pad suit most adult builds right out of the box.
