There's something about a walnut-stocked 20 gauge that just feels right in the hands, and the Retay ACE nails that feeling without giving up modern performance. At the heart of this gun is Retay's Inertia Plus action, which uses a patented rollover torsion spring to rotate the bolt head firmly into battery and keep it there. That solves the classic inertia-gun headache of a bolt getting bumped out of battery when you're climbing into a blind or shouldering in a hurry. It also closes quietly with almost no bolt rattle, which turkey and duck hunters will appreciate at first light.
The 28 inch barrel is deep bore drilled from high-strength steel and comes with a factory-lengthened forcing cone, which helps smooth out patterns and soften the shove of heavier loads. Up top you get a single fiber optic bead that grabs light fast on flushing birds. The 3 inch chamber and 3+1 capacity cover everything from clays to late-season waterfowl loads, and the ACE ships with a full spread of chokes, five standard tubes from Cylinder to Full plus an extended long range wad-friendly tube for when birds are hanging out past your comfort zone.
At 7 pounds 4 ounces, this 20 gauge swings with authority but won't wear you out on a long walk behind the dog. The 14.5 inch length of pull can be tuned with the included shim kit, and Retay's AIRY recoil pad takes a real bite out of felt recoil, up to 30 percent by their testing. The oversized safety is reversible for left-handed use, and the push-button removable trigger group drops out in seconds for cleaning, no tools needed. Yes, the ACE's enhanced Inertia Plus system is designed to run everything from light target loads up to heavy 3 inch waterfowl rounds. Like most inertia guns, it benefits from a firm shoulder mount, but the action was engineered specifically to be less finicky than older inertia designs. Give it a quick break-in with a box or two of stouter loads and it settles right in.
Standard inertia bolts can get jarred out of battery when the gun is bumped, which means a dead trigger at the worst possible moment. Retay's patented rollover torsion spring forces the bolt head to rotate fully into battery and hold there. It also lets the bolt close quietly with virtually no rattle, a nice touch when you're trying to stay quiet in the blind.
It works well for lefties. The oversized safety is reversible, so it can be swapped to the other side, and the walnut stock has a neutral profile that mounts comfortably from either shoulder. Ejection is still to the right side, as this model is the standard right-hand version.
This is one of the easiest semi autos out there to maintain. The entire trigger group pops out at the push of a button with no tools, so you can clean the action even in the field. Inertia systems also run cleaner than gas guns since powder residue isn't cycled back into the receiver, meaning less scrubbing overall.
