High volume wingshooting is a different animal than a slow morning in a duck blind. When the birds are pouring in and you're shooting a couple hundred rounds before dinner, you want a gun that cycles clean, swings smooth, and doesn't leave your shoulder aching the next day. That's the whole idea behind the ACE-R Paloma. Retay took their humpback ACE-R receiver, hung a 28 inch ported barrel with a raised rib on it, and tuned the package for exactly that kind of shooting.
The heart of this gun is Retay's Inertia Plus bolt, which uses a rollover torsion spring to rotate the bolt head firmly into battery and keep it there. That solves the classic inertia gun headache of getting bumped out of battery at the worst possible moment, and it makes for a quiet, rattle-free action. The deep bore drilled barrel comes with a factory lengthened forcing cone, which tightens up patterns and takes some edge off felt recoil before the AIRY pad even gets involved. And that pad does real work, cutting felt recoil by up to 30 percent with an air pocket design borrowed from athletic shoe soles. The barrel porting knocks down muzzle rise too, so your second shot comes back on target quicker.
At 7 pounds 3 ounces, the Paloma carries enough weight up front to swing smoothly without feeling like a boat anchor on a long walk to the field. The raised rib encourages a natural heads-up mount, the fiber optic front bead grabs your eye fast, and the black synthetic stock has a grippy texture that holds on even with sweaty hands in September heat. The oversized safety is reversible for lefties, and the 14.5 inch length of pull can be dialed in with the included shim kit. One of the smartest features on any Retay is the push-button removable trigger group. Pop it out for a quick cleaning right in the field, or store it separately at home to disable the gun entirely. The 3 inch chamber covers everything from light target loads to stouter field ammo, and Retay backs the whole gun with a limited lifetime warranty.
Yes, that's exactly what this gun was set up for. The Inertia Plus system was tuned to run everything from light target loads up through heavier field ammo, and the rollover torsion spring in the bolt keeps the action locked in battery so you're not losing shots to a jarred bolt. High round count afternoons are where this platform earns its keep.
This model has a 3 inch chamber, so it handles both 2.75 and 3 inch 12 gauge shells. That covers light target loads for clays and doves as well as stouter hunting loads. Capacity is 3+1.
Retay uses their MaraPro choke pattern, which shares the same thread pitch and outward look as the Benelli Crio Plus, but with slightly smaller thread and collar diameters. Some Crio Plus chokes will thread in due to tolerances, but Retay doesn't guarantee the fit. Sticking with MaraPro chokes is the safe bet, and a set comes with the gun.
The whole trigger group pops out at the push of a button, no tools needed. That makes it easy to clear out dust and debris during a break in the action, which is handy on dry, dusty dove fields. It also doubles as a storage feature at home, since the gun can't fire with the trigger group removed.
