There's something about a humpback receiver over real walnut that just looks right, and the Retay ACE-R nails that classic profile without going retro on the inside. This 20 gauge runs Retay's patented Inertia Plus bolt, which uses an internal rollover torsion spring to rotate the bolt head fully into battery and keep it there. That solves the biggest gripe with traditional inertia guns, the dreaded click when the bolt gets bumped out of battery on a bird. It also lets you close the bolt slowly and quietly, which anyone who's tried to sneak a shell in with ducks working the decoys will appreciate.
The 26 inch deep bore drilled barrel comes with a factory lengthened forcing cone for smoother patterns and reduced recoil right out of the box, and a fiber optic front bead sits up top for fast target acquisition. The 3 inch chamber handles everything from light target loads to stout bismuth and tungsten waterfowl shells, so one gun genuinely covers doves in September, ducks in December, and clays all summer. A set of chokes running from Cylinder through Full plus an extended long range waterfowl tube means you're covered no matter the shot.
Retay put real thought into the details here. The trigger group drops out at the push of a button, so you can clean it in the field or pull it entirely for an extra layer of storage security. The Easy Out magazine unloading system lets you empty the tube without cycling shells through the chamber. The oversized safety is reversible for lefties, and the receiver is drilled and tapped if you ever want an optic.
The AIRY recoil pad rounds things out, using an internal air pocket design to soak up as much as 30% of felt recoil. On an already soft shooting 20 gauge, that makes for a very pleasant day at the range. Retay backs it all with a limited lifetime warranty for as long as you own the gun.
Yes, that's one of the strong points of the Inertia Plus system. It's designed to run everything from light target loads up to heavy 3 inch magnum hunting shells without adjustment. That makes it practical to shoot cheap loads on the clays course and switch straight to bismuth or tungsten for waterfowl season.
The R stands for the rounded humpback receiver, similar in profile to classic humpback autoloaders. Beyond the receiver shape, the two models share the same action, barrels, stocks, and internal components, so the choice comes down to looks and how the sight picture works for you.
It's a solid option. The oversized safety is reversible, so it can be swapped for left-handed use. The rest of the controls are simple enough that most lefties get along with it fine.
The receiver comes drilled and tapped, so adding a rail or optic mount is straightforward. For most bird hunting and clays work, though, the fiber optic front bead over the humpback receiver gives a fast, natural sight picture right out of the box.
