Anyone who has hiked miles of grouse cover with a heavy autoloader knows the appeal here. The Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight trims a 12 gauge semi auto down to 6 pounds 3 ounces, which puts it in territory usually reserved for 20 gauges. That weight savings comes from a lightweight receiver paired with Retay's proven Inertia Plus action, a design that uses a patented rollover torsion spring to rotate the bolt head firmly into battery and keep it there. Bump it against a tree or toss it in the truck, and it stays ready to fire when the bird gets up.
The 26 inch Deep Bore Drilled barrel gives you enough sighting plane for smooth swings on crossing birds without turning the gun into a pole. A single fiber optic front bead picks up light well in thick cover and low sun, and the included set of five flush chokes (Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Full) lets you match your pattern to everything from close-flushing woodcock to late-season pheasants. The 3 inch chamber runs standard field loads and heavier 3 inch shells alike, and the AIRY recoil pad soaks up a surprising amount of thump for such a light gun.
The AA-grade satin walnut stock is the part people notice first, and no two look quite the same thanks to the natural grain. The 14.5 inch length of pull comes with a shim kit so you can adjust drop and cast for a proper fit, and the oversized reversible crossbolt safety works for lefties too. Retay's push button removable trigger group pops out without tools, so cleaning after a dusty day in the field takes minutes instead of an evening. It all comes backed by Retay's limited lifetime warranty, which says a lot about how they feel about their build quality.
This model comes in at 6 pounds 3 ounces, which is remarkably light for a 12 gauge semi auto. That puts it closer to what many 20 gauge autoloaders weigh, so it carries easily through a full day of walking cover while still giving you 12 gauge payloads when a bird flushes.
It has a 3 inch chamber, so it handles both 2.75 inch and 3 inch 12 gauge shells. The inertia-driven action cycles best with standard field loads and heavier hunting loads. Like most inertia guns, very light target loads may not always cycle reliably, so stick with quality field ammo for hunting.
It ships with five flush-mount choke tubes: Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Full. That range covers just about any upland scenario, from tight quarters grouse hunting with an open choke to longer pokes at late-season pheasants with Modified or tighter.
Yes, Retay's push button system lets you drop the entire trigger group out of the receiver in seconds with no tools required. It makes field cleaning genuinely practical after a dusty hunt, and pulling the trigger group also disables the gun, which some folks like as an extra storage precaution.
