The Remington Game Load is built for the realities of upland hunting. You're walking all day, covering ground, and you need ammo that works without fussing over it. This 20 gauge load does exactly that. With 7/8 ounce of #8 lead shot traveling at 1225 fps, it delivers the pattern consistency you expect from a mainstream manufacturer at a price that makes sense for field work.
Why 20 Gauge and #8 Shot Matter
The 20 gauge holds a solid place in upland hunting. It's lighter to carry through a full day than a 12, the recoil stays manageable even during extended shooting sessions, and with the right load it performs as well as anything else for birds like quail and doves. The #8 shot size is purpose-built for smaller upland game. The pellet count gives you a denser pattern at typical hunting distances, and the smaller projectile weight means less trauma to the meat and more birds suitable for the table.
The 2.75-inch shell length is the standard for upland work. It fits any 20 gauge gun with a 2.75-inch or longer chamber, and it moves fast enough to maintain a useful pattern past 30 yards without excess recoil. At 1225 fps, velocity sits right where it needs to be for consistent downrange performance without turning shooting into a punishment.
Remington Game Loads are a working ammunition choice, not a premium one. That means the company prioritizes getting shells into boxes and into the field over fancy marketing. You get proven wad design, consistent brass, and standard lead hardness. The shells hold up to all-day hunting, and the price makes it possible to practice before the season without emptying your wallet. These aren't speciality loads or match-grade ammunition. They're ammunition that does what it's supposed to do without drama.
#8 shot works best for smaller upland game like quail, doves, and woodcock. For larger birds like pheasants, especially later in the season, you'd typically want to step up to #5 or #6 shot. The Remington Game Load in #8 is purposefully sized for smaller game where pattern density matters more than individual pellet energy.
These 2.75-inch shells will fit any 20 gauge shotgun with a 2.75-inch or longer chamber. Check your shotgun's specifications to confirm chamber length. If your gun has a 3-inch chamber, you can still use 2.75-inch shells without any problems, but you won't be able to use 3-inch shells in a 2.75-inch chamber.
Remington Game Loads are built on the same manufacturing standards as higher-priced loads but without the premium marketing or specialty components. You get the same reliable performance at a lower cost, making them ideal for practice or hunters who shoot high volume during the season. They're not match-grade ammunition, but they're dependable field ammunition.
The 20 gauge is a proven choice for upland hunting, particularly for smaller game birds. It carries easier than a 12 gauge over long days, produces less recoil, and with the right load delivers effective patterns at typical upland hunting ranges. Many hunters prefer it specifically for the weight and recoil advantage.
