Remington Core-Lokt ammunition has been the standard for big game hunters since 1939, and the .308 Winchester 180-grain load is about as proven as it gets. This isn't cutting-edge or trendy, but it's dependable in the way that matters when you're out in the field.
The bullet design is straightforward and effective. A tapered copper jacket is mechanically locked to a solid lead core, which controls expansion to roughly twice the original diameter while maintaining excellent weight retention. This balance is key—you get rapid energy transfer without the bullet coming apart or failing to penetrate. The pointed soft point profile improves the ballistic coefficient compared to traditional blunt soft points, so the round retains velocity better as it travels downrange, particularly between 200 and 300 yards where most hunting shots happen.
At 2620 fps muzzle velocity with 2743 ft-lbs of energy, the 180-grain load brings solid power to bear on deer, hog, and bear-sized game. The heavier bullet weight and sectional density mean good penetration even without bonded construction, which is part of why this ammunition remains so widely used. You're not getting premium ammunition pricing or the latest bullet technology, but that's the point—Core-Lokt does the job without the cost.
These come in reloadable brass cases with non-corrosive boxer primers, so if you reload or plan to, you're getting components worth saving. That's genuine value that extends the cost-per-shot even lower than the box price suggests.
The 180-grain load works well on deer, hogs, black bears, and similar-sized game. With good sectional density and controlled expansion, it penetrates effectively on larger animals too. Most hunters find it well-suited for hunting within 300 yards, where the Core-Lokt's proven expansion and penetration shine.
Yes. Core-Lokt ammunition comes in reloadable brass cases with boxer primers, both of which are reloadable. This adds real value if you reload your own ammunition, extending your cost-per-shot over multiple firings.
The pointed (spitzer) profile improves the ballistic coefficient, so the bullet retains velocity better at distance. This gives you a flatter trajectory and maintains more energy at 200 and 300 yards compared to blunt soft point designs, all while maintaining the proven expansion characteristics Core-Lokt is known for.
Core-Lokt is middle-ground ammunition—not budget pricing, but not premium pricing either. It's mainstream ammunition that uses traditional bullet construction rather than bonded cores or polymer tips. You're paying for dependable, proven performance, which is why so many hunters reach for it without hesitation.
