Redding's Big Boss earns its name. This single-stage press is built on a heavy-duty cast iron O-frame that shrugs off flex and vibration, which is exactly what you want when you're sizing stubborn magnum brass. The 36-degree frame offset opens up your line of sight and gives your hands room to work, and the generous 4-1/2-inch frame opening swallows the longest cartridges without a fight. The heart of this press is a 1-inch diameter ram paired with a long 3-13/16-inch usable stroke, giving you plenty of travel for everything from .223 up through big belted magnums. The frame-and-ball handle runs through a heavy-duty compound linkage, so full-length sizing takes less effort and the ram rides smooth from top to bottom. Reloaders consistently note there's zero play at full extension, which is the kind of rigidity that keeps runout low and case life long.
Priming happens right on the press with Redding's Smart primer arm, which swings into position during the ram stroke and tucks out of the way when you don't need it. Both large and small primer arm assemblies come in the box, so you're covered for pistol and rifle work without buying extras. On the die side, the included steel adapter bushing threads in all standard 7/8-14 dies from Redding, RCBS, Hornady, Lee, Forster and the rest. Pull the bushing and the frame accepts larger 1-1/4-12 dies for heavy-body applications.
This is American-made cast iron that's meant to outlive the reloader who buys it. It mounts with three bolt holes for a rock-solid setup, though mounting hardware isn't included so plan on a few bolts for your bench. Yes, that's exactly what it's built for. It does. The press uses Redding's Smart primer arm, which automatically swings into position during the ram stroke and flips out of the way when you're not priming. Both large and small primer arm assemblies are included, so you can prime rifle and pistol brass right on the press.
They share the same heavy cast iron frame, 1-inch ram and die compatibility, but the Big Boss II adds Redding's spent primer collection system that routes spent primers through the hollow ram into a catch tube. The original Big Boss covered here uses a standard primer catcher instead. Both are excellent, the II just adds that cleaner primer management feature.
