There is something about a roller-delayed .308 that just never goes out of style, and the PTR-91 GI nails that old-school look better than anything else on the shelf. PTR builds these rifles in South Carolina using tooling and blueprints acquired from the original Portuguese HK licensee, so this is a true HK91-pattern rifle, not a parts-bin project. The GI model pairs a Parkerized gray finish with genuine surplus G3 OD green furniture and a metal SEF-style lower housing, giving it that authentic service rifle character right out of the box.
The 18 inch match grade barrel wears the original G3 stepped taper profile with a 1:10 twist, and it is cut with the proper fluted chamber so it cycles the wide range of .308 Win and 7.62×51 NATO ammo on the market without complaint. The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24 with a removable flash hider, which opens the door to just about any muzzle device you would want to run. Sights are the classic rotary diopter rear with a hooded front post, adjustable and plenty capable of ringing steel well past 300 yards once you learn the platform.
PTR ships this one without the welded top rail, and that is a feature, not an oversight. The clean receiver accepts original-style HK claw mounts and carry handles, which purists will appreciate since it keeps the profile true to the original G3. You also get the paddle magazine release and a 20-round detachable magazine, and spare surplus mags for this platform remain some of the most affordable .308 magazines you can buy.
At around 9.5 pounds, this is a rifle built like a tank, and that heft soaks up .308 recoil nicely. The surplus furniture and lower may show a little character from prior service, which most owners consider part of the charm. PTR backs its rifles with a limited lifetime warranty, so this is a battle rifle you can shoot hard for years.
It is about as close to the real thing as you can get without an HK roll mark. PTR acquired the original tooling and designs for the roller-delayed HK platform from Fabrica Militar of Portugal, a licensed HK producer, and now manufactures every part in the USA. Mechanically it is a faithful HK91-pattern rifle, not a pieced-together parts gun.
Yes. The barrel is built with the proper fluted chamber the roller-delayed system needs, and it handles the wide variety of commercial .308 Win and surplus 7.62 NATO loads reliably. That flexibility is one of the big draws of this platform.
The GI model leaves the receiver rail-free on purpose, which keeps the classic G3 profile and lets you use original-style HK claw mounts. A quality claw mount clamps onto the receiver's dimples and returns to zero well. If you want a permanent Picatinny rail from the factory, look at PTR's GI R variant instead.
The OD green stock and handguard are genuine G3 military surplus, so light wear and color variation are normal and add to the authentic service rifle look. The action, barrel, and receiver are newly manufactured by PTR. Most buyers see the surplus character as a plus on this model.
