The Sig Cross was built around the idea of quick caliber changes, and this Proof Research pre-fit barrel is exactly the kind of upgrade that platform was made for. It comes chambered and threaded from the factory in 260 Rem, an 18-inch carbon fiber wrapped barrel with a 1:8 twist and a 5-groove bore. Because it ships with the barrel extension already fitted, you can headspace and install it at home without shipping your rifle off to a gunsmith. A 1-1/16" wrench and the reused Cross barrel nut get the job done on the bench.
Proof starts with match-grade 416R stainless blanks, then turns them down and wraps them in high-strength, aerospace-grade carbon fiber set in a proprietary resin matrix. The payoff is a barrel that runs up to 64% lighter than a steel barrel of similar contour without giving up accuracy. That carbon wrap also pulls heat out of the barrel more efficiently, so you get better heat dissipation and a barrel that holds its zero through longer strings of fire.
The 260 Remington is a sweet-shooting cartridge that pushes 6.5mm bullets at flat-shooting speeds with mild recoil, which makes it a favorite for both hunting and steel work. The muzzle comes cut with common 5/8"-24 threading, so your existing brake, flash hider, or suppressor mount threads right on. If you already own a Cross and want a lighter, cooler-running 6.5 barrel, this is one of the cleaner ways to get there.
Yes, that is the whole idea behind the pre-fit design. The barrel ships chambered and fitted with the barrel extension, so you can headspace and install it at home. You will reuse the factory Cross barrel nut and a 1-1/16" wrench to torque it in place.
The 1:8 twist is well suited to the heavier, high-BC 6.5mm bullets that the 260 Rem shines with, generally in the 130 to 147 grain range. It also stabilizes lighter hunting bullets without issue, so you have room to load for both range work and game.
