Description

Staking a plunger tube on a 1911 has a reputation for going sideways, usually because folks are wrestling a metal tool right up against a nicely finished frame. EGW took a different route with this one. Instead of a solid steel tool that can leave scratches and dents, they machined the support block out of hard Delrin, the same tough material used for their bushing wrenches. You still get firm, controlled staking pressure, just without the metal-on-metal contact that tends to mar the outside of the pistol.

The kit is a two-piece setup. The Delrin block cradles the plunger tube and surrounding frame area while the carbon steel staking bar spreads the pins. What makes it genuinely handy is the cutout in the staking bar that clears the ejector, so you can stake the tube without pulling the ejector first. That alone saves a real chunk of fussing on a build or a repair.

What Sets the EGW Staking Tool Apart

The staking point itself is a hardened steel screw, and it threads in so you can dial in the staking depth to match the job. When that point eventually wears down, you swap in the included spare screw and the tool is back to fresh. The Delrin block also has cutouts sized for both rounded and square plunger tubes, and they're positioned so the block always rests on a flat side for full support during the job.

Getting Clean Results With the Delrin Staking Tool

For best results, most gunsmiths open a small relief on the plunger tube holes inside the frame using a Dremel or air grinder with a small ball cutter, then apply red Loctite before setting the tube. A solid bench vise keeps everything steady while you work. EGW has a walkthrough video and printed instructions covering the process step by step, so even if this is your first plunger tube install, you're not flying blind. Whether you're fitting a fresh tube or snugging up a loose one, this tool takes a lot of the anxiety out of the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to remove the ejector to use the EGW plunger tube staking tool?

No, and that's one of the nicer touches on this tool. The steel staking bar has a cutout that clears the ejector, so you can stake the tube with the ejector still in place. It saves a step and cuts down on extra disassembly.

Will this staking tool scratch or mar my 1911 frame?

The whole point of the Delrin block is to prevent that. Because the support piece is machined from hard Delrin instead of steel, it eliminates the metal-on-metal contact on the exterior surfaces that usually leaves scratches. You still get firm staking pressure without chewing up the finish.

What else do I need to stake a plunger tube with this kit?

A good bench vise is important to hold everything steady, and most gunsmiths use a Dremel or air grinder with a small ball cutter to open a small relief on the plunger tube holes inside the frame. Red Loctite on the tube before staking is also recommended. You'll want a hammer and a small hex key for the staking screw as well.

Does the tool work with both round and square plunger tubes?

Yes. The Delrin block is cut to support both rounded and square plunger tubes, and the cutouts are positioned so the block always rests on a flat side. That gives you full support no matter which tube style you're working with.
