There's always been a tradeoff with 1911 grips. Wood looks right on a classic Government model, but it can get slick when your hands are sweaty or wet. Rubber holds on like glue, but it doesn't exactly dress up a nice pistol. Pachmayr's American Legend grips split the difference, and they do it well. The side panels are Pacwood, a rosewood laminate with a smooth satin finish that gives you that traditional warm-toned look, while a wraparound insert of Decelerator neoprene rubber covers the frontstrap with deep molded finger grooves for real control.
The rubber section uses sharp molded diamonds that bite into your palm just enough to keep the gun planted through recoil without chewing up your hand over a long range session. Because Decelerator is a semi-soft neoprene compound, it also takes a little sting out of each shot, which you'll appreciate by the time you're a few boxes deep into .45 ACP. The panels have neatly beveled bottom edges, a cutout for the mainspring housing pin, and relief cuts that clear ambidextrous thumb safeties, so lefties and ambi-safety setups are covered.
Fit-wise, these are made for the full-size Colt Government 1911 and most full-size Government-pattern copies. Installation is a straightforward swap using your existing grip screws, with no fitting or modification to the pistol required. If your frame runs an ambidextrous safety, the relief cuts are already there waiting for it.

These are built for the full-size Colt Government frame and most Government-pattern 1911 copies from other makers. Since Commander-length pistols typically share the same full-size frame, they generally work there too. They are not made for Officer-size or compact 1911 frames, which use shorter grip panels.

The wraparound rubber and finger grooves do add a bit of girth compared to bare wood panels on a standard frontstrap. Most shooters with medium to large hands find the grooves index naturally and improve control. If you have smaller hands or prefer a slim 1911 feel, a flat-panel grip may suit you better.
That's the whole point of the Decelerator insert. The molded diamond texture grabs reliably wet or dry, but the semi-soft neoprene compound doesn't dig into your palm the way sharp checkered metal or G10 can. It also softens felt recoil a touch, which makes long sessions with full-power .45 ACP loads more comfortable.
