There is something about a single action revolver that never gets old, and Pietta found a smart way to keep the tradition going without the sting of premium cowboy ammo prices. The Great Western II Posse takes the classic 1873 pattern, complete with a color case hardened steel frame, blued barrel and cylinder, and a smooth walnut grip, and chambers it in 9mm Luger. That means you get all the character of an old west sixgun while feeding it the most common and affordable centerfire pistol cartridge on the shelf. The 9mm version of the Posse joined the lineup in 2023 after the model first appeared in 2018, and it has been a favorite with plinkers and traditional revolver fans ever since.
The Posse sits between Pietta's Sheriff and standard barrel configurations. Unlike the Sheriff, it keeps a full ejector rod and head, so clearing empties is quick and simple. Pietta also machined a small cut-around into the ejector housing that lets the rod head pivot slightly to the side. That clever touch means you can pull the base pin and drop the cylinder for cleaning without stripping the whole ejector assembly off the gun. It is a small detail, but anyone who cleans their revolvers regularly will appreciate it.
The 3.5 inch barrel keeps this one compact and quick handling, whether you are working steel plates, introducing a new shooter to single action fundamentals, or just enjoying a relaxed afternoon of hammer-cocking fun. Sights are the traditional fixed blade front and frame notch rear, true to the 1873 style. The single action only lockwork gives you that crisp, mechanical feel these guns are known for, and the two-tone case colors against the walnut grip make it as nice to look at as it is to shoot. If you have been wanting a sixgun you can run all day on bulk ammo, this is the one to grab.
The Sheriff model deletes the ejector rod entirely, while the Posse keeps a full ejector rod and head for easy extraction. The Posse also has a small cut-around in the ejector housing that lets the rod head pivot to the side, so you can remove the base pin and pull the cylinder without taking off the whole ejector assembly. It makes cleaning noticeably easier.
No moon clips required. The cylinder headspaces the rimless 9mm case on the case mouth, and the ejector rod pushes empties out one at a time just like a traditional single action. Load and unload through the gate like any other 1873-pattern revolver.
It is one of the biggest draws of this gun. 9mm Luger is the most widely available and budget-friendly centerfire pistol round out there, so you can shoot the Posse far more for the same money compared to 45 Colt or 357 Magnum sixguns. Recoil is mild too, which makes it a great trainer for anyone new to single actions.
It wears traditional 1873-style fixed sights, meaning a blade front and a notch cut into the frame's top strap for the rear. There is nothing to adjust or knock out of place, which keeps things simple and period correct. Most fixed-sight single actions shoot close to point of aim, and you can fine tune with different bullet weights.
