There is a reason the Alchimista II keeps showing up on cowboy action ranges. Pietta took the proven 1873 Great Western II platform and swapped in an 1860 Army grip frame, which is longer and slimmer than the standard 1873 grip. The difference is something you feel the moment you pick it up. The gun settles into your hand and points where you are looking, which matters a lot when you are running a stage against the clock or just plinking steel on a Saturday afternoon.
The grip frame is only half the story. Pietta also fitted a wider competition trigger that sits set back in the guard, giving folks with bigger hands more room to work and a broader, more comfortable trigger face for consistent presses. The hammer is lowered and widened as well, so cocking it fast with your thumb or off hand feels smooth and sure. Chambered in .45 Colt with a six-round cylinder and a 5.5 inch blued barrel, it carries the classic sight picture of a fixed blade front, just like the originals.
Pietta has been building traditional single actions in Italy for decades, and the fit and finish here shows it. The color case-hardened steel frame gives each revolver its own one-of-a-kind swirl of blues, browns, and grays, set against the deep blue of the barrel and cylinder. Checkered walnut Army grips round out the look and give your hand real purchase when the gun rolls back under recoil.

The big change is the 1860 Army grip frame, which is longer and slimmer than the standard 1873 grip and points more naturally for most hands. Pietta also added a wider competition trigger that is set back in the guard for extra finger room, plus a lowered and widened hammer that is easier to cock quickly. It is essentially a Great Western II tuned for comfort and speed.
It was practically built for it. The set-back trigger, widened hammer, and natural-pointing 1860 Army grip are exactly the kinds of upgrades competitors look for, and .45 Colt is one of the most popular calibers in the sport. Many folks run these right out of the box without needing extra tuning.
Stick to standard pressure .45 Colt ammunition, including cowboy loads and typical factory offerings. Traditional SAA-pattern revolvers like this are not designed for the hot +P loads meant for Ruger Blackhawks and similar heavy-framed guns. Standard .45 Colt has plenty of punch and keeps the gun happy for the long haul.
It follows the classic Single Action Army method. Set the hammer to the loading position, open the loading gate on the right side of the frame, and rotate the cylinder to load or eject one chamber at a time using the ejector rod under the barrel. Like the originals, many traditionalists carry it with the hammer down on an empty chamber.
