Description

Pietta's Great Western II Deluxe Californian takes one of the most popular single action revolvers around and dresses it up with Ultra Ivory grips that used to show up only on the Custom Series guns. You get the classic lines of the Colt 1873 Single Action Army, a 4.75 inch barrel, and a six-shot cylinder chambered in .357 Magnum. The frame wears Pietta's signature color case hardening with that rich mix of blues, browns, and purples, while the barrel, cylinder, backstrap, and trigger guard are finished in deep blued black steel. It's a looker, and it backs up the looks with solid build quality.

What Sets the Deluxe Californian Apart

Unlike the cast frames found on some older single actions, the Californian uses a frame that's drop forged and then CNC machined, paired with a hammer-forged steel barrel. True to the originals, it runs a floating firing pin in the hammer rather than a transfer bar, which keeps it period correct. The wider rear notch and larger blade front sight make picking up a sight picture quicker than the thin sights on a lot of traditional single actions. Owners regularly point out the clean four-click hammer, smooth factory-tuned action, and tight lockup.

Caliber and Range Use for the Great Western II Californian

Chambered in .357 Magnum, this one also handles .38 Special, so you can run lighter, cheaper .38s for plinking and cowboy action practice, then step up to full-power .357 loads when you want more authority. That versatility is a big reason the .357 is such a popular pick in these revolvers. Pietta single actions have a long history with SASS and cowboy action shooters, and they've earned a reputation as a lot of gun for the money whether you're competing, collecting, or just enjoying a day at the range.

Styling That Earns a Spot in the Safe

The Ultra Ivory grips against the color case hardened frame give this revolver a presence that photos don't fully capture. It feels balanced in the hand and points naturally, the kind of six-gun you reach for because you want to, not just because you need to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Great Western II Deluxe Californian shoot .38 Special?

Yes. Any revolver chambered in .357 Magnum will also safely fire the shorter, lower-pressure .38 Special. That lets you run inexpensive, light-recoiling .38s for practice and cowboy action work, then load full .357 Magnum when you want more power. Firing a lot of .38s can build a carbon ring at the front of the chambers over time, so a good cleaning keeps your .357 cases seating smoothly.

Is this a true single action revolver?

It is. The Great Western II Californian follows the classic Colt 1873 Single Action Army design, so the hammer has to be manually cocked before each shot. You'll feel the traditional four clicks as you draw the hammer back. That old-school operation is exactly why these are so popular in SASS and cowboy action shooting.

What makes the Deluxe Californian different from the standard Californian?

The main upgrade is the Ultra Ivory grips, which Pietta previously offered only on its Custom Series guns. You still get the same color case hardened frame, hammer-forged steel barrel, and floating firing pin, just with dressier grips that give the revolver a more striking look. It's the same proven platform with a touch of extra class.

Does it use a floating firing pin or a transfer bar?

This revolver uses a floating firing pin in the hammer, just like the original Colts, rather than a modern transfer bar. That's part of what makes it period correct. Owners note the action is smooth right out of the box with the factory-tuned feel Pietta is known for.
