The MDT Oryx Sportsman Chassis is one of the easiest ways to take a factory Howa 1500 short action and turn it into something that shoots and feels like a purpose-built precision rifle. It's machined from a single block of MIL-Spec Type III hard anodized 6061 aluminum, so your barreled action sits in a rigid, stable foundation instead of flexing polymer. The action gets bedded on an aluminum block and the barrel free floats through a wide channel, which is the combination that helps tighten up your groups without ever touching the barrel or bedding compound.
Adjustability is where this chassis earns its keep. Length of pull runs 13 to 13.5 inches out of the box with room for more using a spacer kit, and the cheek riser adjusts up and down so you can line your eye up dead center behind your optic. It ships with an elite AR-style pistol grip, and since it accepts standard AR15 grips, you can swap in whatever fits your hand best. The forend carries M-LOK slots underneath for a bipod or ARCA rail, and there's an integrated barricade stop up front for shooting off props and obstacles.
This chassis is built around AICS-pattern detachable magazines, so you get quick reloads and higher capacity than the factory floorplate ever offered. MDT's polymer AICS short action mags tend to seat and latch the smoothest here, though metal AICS mags will run too. It fits Howa 1500 short action rifles as well as Weatherby Vanguard short actions, and handles barrel contours up to 1.250 inches at the shank.
Installation is about as painless as chassis work gets. Drop the barreled action in, run the two action screws MDT includes in the box, and you're ready to sight in. At right around 4.2 pounds, the Oryx keeps overall rifle weight reasonable while still feeling planted behind the trigger. The interchangeable side panels come in OD Green and can be swapped later if you want to change up the look.
