The firing pin stop is one of the most overlooked yet functional upgrades you can make to a Series 70 1911. This small steel plate sits at the rear of your slide, controlling firing pin travel while also influencing how your slide interacts with the hammer during the recoil cycle. The EGW oversized version addresses common issues that come with loose factory tolerances across different slide manufacturers.
Standard firing pin stops are made to generic dimensions that work okay in some guns and loosely in others. The EGW oversized design is intentionally machined larger, giving you material to work with so you can fit it precisely to your specific slide. The wider profile prevents your extractor from rotating, which is a common problem that leads to inconsistent case ejection. The extra thickness eliminates side-to-side movement that factory parts allow, resulting in a tighter lockup and more predictable function throughout your shot string.
The square edge bottom is where this part really shines for recoil control. Instead of the rounded profile most factory parts have, the EGW maintains a mostly square bottom with just a .015" micro radius to keep it from digging into your frame. That square edge contacts the hammer lower on its face during cycling, requiring the slide to work slightly harder when it recoils. This modest resistance slows your slide velocity enough to reduce felt recoil and muzzle flip without compromising reliability. The internal corners are radiused to prevent stress cracking during long-term use, and the whole part is hardness-tested to 48 Rc on the Rockwell scale.
This is not a drop-in part. It comes oversized so you can file it to fit your particular slide, which typically takes 20-30 minutes. The payoff is a rock-solid fit that won't shift around. Once properly fitted, many users report a noticeably smoother recoil impulse and more reliable ejection. Series 70 firing pin stops work only in Series 70 1911s and clones, though Series 80 stops can be adapted to Series 70 guns if needed.
This stop is specifically designed for Series 70 pistols only. Series 80 firing pin stops can be adapted to work in Series 70 guns, but Series 70 stops do not work in Series 80 guns due to the different firing pin safety mechanism in Series 80 frames. Check your pistol's documentation to confirm which series you have.
