Anyone who has spent time with a traditional mini revolver knows the drill: pop the base pin, pull the whole cylinder out, poke the empties loose, reload, reassemble. The Sidewinder does away with all of that. North American Arms fitted this little single action with a swing-out cylinder on a frame-mounted crane, and it changes the whole experience. Press the latch, swing the cylinder out to the right side, eject, reload, snap it back in. It sounds like a small thing until you have done it side by side with the old way.
This version pairs the swing-out design with a 2.5" barrel, which buys you a bit more velocity and a longer sight radius over the stubby 1" models without giving up the deep-concealment footprint. Chambered in .22 WMR with a 5-round cylinder, it weighs in around 7.7 ounces and stretches just over 6 inches overall. That is genuinely small, close in size to a box of ammo, and it disappears in a pocket or a pack pouch. The whole gun is stainless steel, with polished cylinder and frame sides set against matte surfaces on the topstrap and barrel. NAA's fit and finish on these has a well-earned reputation, and this one shows it.
Operation is classic single action: cock the exposed hammer for each shot, aim with the fixed post front sight, squeeze. The cylinder includes safety notches between chambers so the hammer can rest safely with all five loaded. The rosewood bird's head grip looks sharp and gives most hands a workable purchase, and larger aftermarket grips are easy to find if you want more to hold onto. The big difference is the swing-out cylinder. Standard NAA minis require you to remove the base pin and pull the entire cylinder out of the frame to load or unload. The Sidewinder uses a frame-mounted crane that swings the cylinder out to the right side, so reloads are noticeably faster and there are no loose parts to juggle.
NAA offers a combo version of the Sidewinder that ships with a .22 LR cylinder, but this SW250 model is .22 WMR only. Because cylinder timing is fitted to each individual gun, adding a conversion cylinder afterward means sending the revolver back to NAA to have it fitted. If you know you want both calibers, the combo model is the simpler route from the start.
Yes. Like other NAA revolvers, the cylinder has safety notches between the chambers where the hammer can rest. With the hammer sitting in a notch rather than over a live round, the gun can be carried fully loaded without the hammer contacting a cartridge rim.
The longer barrel gives .22 WMR loads more velocity than the 1 inch versions and provides a longer sight radius, which makes it easier to shoot well. It is still a very small revolver, around 7.7 ounces and just over 6 inches long, so it remains easy to pocket or stash in a pack as a backup or trail gun.
