North American Arms took the frame of their popular Earl, trimmed the heavy octagonal barrel down to 2.5 inches, and ended up with the Sheriff, the most compact member of the 1860 series. It keeps all the 1860s styling that makes these little revolvers so much fun, including the exposed spur hammer, stainless post front sight, and a rectangular cylinder pin that lines up cleanly with the flats of that octagonal barrel. The rosewood boot grip rounds out the look and gives your fingers something real to hold onto. At about 6.3 inches overall and roughly 7.7 ounces, it disappears in a pocket without a second thought.

Two Cylinders, One Sheriff

This is the convertible version, which means you get a .22 Magnum cylinder and a .22 Long Rifle conversion cylinder in the same box. Swapping between them takes seconds thanks to the push-button latch pin, which also makes loading and unloading noticeably easier than the older twist-pin setup. Run inexpensive .22 LR for range days and plinking sessions, then drop in the Magnum cylinder when you want more thump. The .22 Mag cylinder will also handle shotshell loads, which makes this a handy little companion for dealing with snakes around the property.

Carrying the 1860 Sheriff Safely

Like every NAA mini revolver, the Sheriff uses halfway notches machined between the chambers. Rest the hammer in one of those notches and you can safely carry all five rounds loaded, no empty chamber required. It is a smart, simple system that has been a hallmark of these guns for decades.
