North American Arms has been machining tiny stainless revolvers in Utah since the early 1970s, and the .22 Magnum frame is the one that made their name. This ported version keeps everything people like about the standard 1 5/8 inch Magnum mini and adds real, working ports machined near the muzzle. Out of a barrel this short, .22 WMR produces noticeable flash and flip, so venting gas upward before the bullet exits helps keep the front end settled and gets you back on target quicker for follow-up shots. On a gun that weighs mere ounces, that little bit of help matters more than you'd think.
The whole package disappears into a pocket, a boot, or just about anywhere else you can think to stash it. The frame and cylinder are stainless steel, so sweat and weather aren't going to eat at it the way they would a blued gun. Rosewood bird's head grips give it a touch of old-school character and let the gun roll naturally in your hand under recoil. Sights are a simple fixed bead up front with a notch in the frame, which suits a gun built for close, quick work rather than bullseye matches.
NAA's half-notch safety cylinder is the feature that makes these minis practical to carry. Between each chamber there's a notch where the hammer rests securely, so you can load all five rounds and carry with the hammer parked safely away from any live primer. It's a smart, mechanical solution that's been proven over decades of production. The single action lockwork is simple and stout: cock the hammer, press the trigger, repeat.
The magnum cylinder runs all common .22 WMR loads, including shotshell rounds that folks in snake country appreciate. Whether it rides as a backup, a hiking companion, or the gun you grab when nothing bigger will hide, this ported mini does its one job very well: it's always with you.
Not as it ships. This model, NAA-22M-P, comes with the .22 Magnum cylinder only. North American Arms offers a longer .22 LR conversion cylinder that drops into this frame, and there's also a combo version (NAA-22MC-P) that includes both cylinders from the factory. If you want cheap plinking with .22 LR down the road, the conversion cylinder is an easy add.
The ports are small vents machined near the muzzle along the top of the barrel. When you fire, they redirect some of the expanding gas upward, which pushes the muzzle down and counters the flip that .22 Magnum produces out of a short barrel. On a gun this light, it makes recoil feel more controlled and helps you stay on target for a second shot.
Yes, and that's by design. The cylinder has half-notches machined between each chamber where the hammer rests, keeping it completely clear of any cartridge rim. Just make sure the hammer is seated in one of those notches when you holster or pocket the gun, and it can't fire if dropped or bumped.
You can. The magnum cylinder handles all popular .22 WMR ammunition, including the shotshell loads some manufacturers sell as snake shot. That makes this little revolver a favorite for hikers, campers, and anyone working around barns or brush where a load of fine shot at close range comes in handy.
