Some guns are compact, and then there is the NAA 22MCP. This five shot single action from North American Arms is machined from stainless steel, weighs right around 6.5 ounces, and rides in spots where even the smallest micro nines feel bulky. Watch pocket, hiking pack, tackle box, it goes wherever you do. This is the convertible combo, so both cylinders come in the box: the .22 WMR cylinder for carry duty and a .22 LR conversion cylinder for inexpensive range time. The LR cylinder is machined a touch longer so it fills the Magnum frame properly, and swapping between the two takes just a few seconds once you pull the cylinder pin.
What sets this model apart from the standard convertible is the porting. The 1.63 inch barrel wears three ports on each side near the muzzle, venting gases upward to fight muzzle flip. On a gun this light, .22 Magnum has some snap to it, and the porting helps keep that stainless bead front sight settled for quicker follow up shots. The barrel is cut from 17-4 stainless bar stock with eight groove rifling at a 1:12 twist, and the longer tube also buys you a bit more velocity and sight radius than the shorter snub versions.
North American Arms has been refining these minis for decades, and the machining shows it. Rosewood birds head grips give the little frame some warmth and a surprisingly usable hold, while the all stainless construction shrugs off sweat and pocket carry far better than a blued finish would. The signature halfway notch system lets the hammer rest in a safety notch between chambers, so you can carry all five loaded with the hammer sitting securely off any rim. The Magnum cylinder also runs .22 WMR shotshells, which makes this a handy companion for snake country. Simple, tough, and about as easy to keep on you as a pocketknife, the 22MCP earns its spot as a backup or deep concealment piece.
Press the release button on the cylinder pin, slide the pin out from under the barrel, and the cylinder drops free of the frame. Set the .22 LR or .22 WMR cylinder in place and reinsert the pin. It takes only a few seconds once you have done it a couple of times, and loading and unloading work the same way since the cylinder comes out of the frame.
Yes, thanks to NAA's halfway notch cylinder design. Between each chamber there is a safety notch where the hammer can rest, keeping it completely off any cartridge rim. Lower the hammer into one of those notches and the gun can be carried fully loaded without the hammer sitting on a live round.

On a 6.5 ounce gun shooting .22 Magnum, that venting noticeably cuts muzzle flip and helps you stay on target for follow up shots. It is the main upgrade over the standard non-ported convertible model.
The .22 Magnum cylinder handles all popular .22 WMR ammunition, including rimfire shotshells often sold as snake shot. That makes it a popular sidearm for hikers, anglers, and folks working around snake country. Just remember shotshell patterns from a short barrel are only effective at very close range.
