Some guns earn their keep by being there when nothing else would be. The North American Arms Mini .22 LR is that gun. At roughly 4 inches overall and weighing about as much as a couple of candy bars, it tucks into a pocket, a pack, or one of NAA's many holster options and stays out of your way until you need it. This version wears black pearlite grips over the stainless frame, which gives the little five-shooter a classic look without adding any bulk.
This is a single action revolver in the old-school sense. You cock the hammer for every shot, and the cylinder pulls out of the frame for loading and unloading. Capacity is 5 rounds of .22 LR fed through a 1 1/8 inch barrel with a fixed half-moon front sight. The part that matters most for carry is the halfway-notch cylinder. Between each chamber there is a notch where the hammer can rest securely, so you can load all five rounds and carry it without the hammer sitting over a live round. It is a simple, proven system that NAA has built its reputation on.
The whole gun is stainless steel, so sweat and pocket lint will not eat it alive the way they can with blued finishes. Fit and finish on these little revolvers is consistently tight, and NAA has been machining them in Utah for decades. The .22 LR Mini is the most popular model in the lineup for good reason: ammo is cheap and easy to find, recoil is next to nothing, and the size makes it a natural backup piece, trail companion, or deep-concealment option. The pearlite grips on this one add a touch of style that sets it apart from the plain wood versions, and the aftermarket for holsters, folding grips, and accessories is huge. It is not a range toy you will shoot all day, it is a tool that goes everywhere, and that is exactly the point.
Yes, and that is one of the best features of the design. The cylinder has halfway notches machined between each chamber, and when the hammer rests in one of those notches it cannot contact a cartridge rim. That means you can load all five rounds and carry it without worrying about the hammer sitting over a live round.
The cylinder comes completely out of the frame. You remove the cylinder pin, drop the cylinder into your hand, load or eject rounds, then reassemble. It is slower than a swing-out cylinder, but for a gun this size it is a simple and reliable system once you have done it a few times.
Mechanically they are the same revolver: stainless steel, 1 1/8 inch barrel, 5-shot cylinder, single action. The difference is the black pearlite grip panels, which give this version a dressed-up look compared to the standard wood grips. Weight and overall dimensions stay essentially identical, so any holster made for the standard Mini fits this one too.
It fills a specific role really well. This is a deep-concealment or backup piece for situations where anything larger gets left at home, and a gun on you beats one in the safe. Keep expectations realistic on the range since the short barrel and small sights make it a close-distance tool, but with practice it is surprisingly manageable.
