Mechanically, this is the same watch-like single action design NAA is known for. Five rounds of .22 WMR ride in the cylinder, the exposed hammer cocks for each shot, and a fixed half moon front sight keeps things simple for close-range work. Halfway between each chamber there is a machined notch in the cylinder, and resting the hammer in one of them lets you carry all five chambers loaded without the hammer sitting over a live round. No, this model ships with a dedicated .22 Magnum cylinder, and .22 LR should never be fired in a magnum chamber. North American Arms does offer .22 LR conversion cylinders for its magnum-frame minis, so if you want cheap plinking ammo down the road, contact NAA about fitting one to your gun.
Yes, and that is one of the best features of the NAA mini revolver design. The cylinder has machined safety notches located halfway between each chamber, and lowering the hammer into one of those notches keeps it completely off any live round. When you cock the hammer, the cylinder rotates to bring a fresh chamber in line with the barrel.
Two big things set it apart. The whole gun gets a high-polish finish instead of the standard matte stainless, giving it a much dressier look, and the barrel measures 1.13 inches rather than the 1.63 inches found on the standard magnum model. That makes the Deluxe both shorter and shinier, which is exactly the point.
Loading is done by removing the cylinder from the frame. Put the hammer in the half-cock position, pull the cylinder pin, drop the cylinder out, and load your five rounds. The pin doubles as an ejector for pushing out spent cases. It takes a little practice, but it becomes second nature quickly.
