North American Arms named this one the Pug for a reason. It's short, stout, and a lot tougher than its size suggests. At 4.5 inches long, 2.75 inches tall, and 6.4 ounces, this is a five-shot .22 Magnum revolver you can drop in a pocket and forget about until you need it. The whole gun is stainless steel, frame, cylinder, and 1 inch heavy barrel, so pocket lint, sweat, and humidity aren't going to give it much trouble.
Most mini revolvers this size make you squint down a tiny gutter sight and hang on with two fingers. The Pug fixes both problems. The XS white dot front sight is big, bright, and fast to pick up, which is exactly what you want on a gun built for close, quick work. The slip-on pebble-textured rubber grip is slightly oversized compared to the bird's head grips on standard minis, giving your hand something real to hold onto when you touch off a .22 WMR from a 1 inch tube. It's still tiny, just far easier to run well.
The Pug is single action, so you cock the spurred hammer for every shot. There's not much to go wrong with that setup, and it's part of why these little revolvers have such a loyal following. NAA machines safety notches between the chambers, letting the hammer rest securely between loaded rounds so you can carry all five chambers filled. Loading and unloading is done by removing the cylinder pin, old-school and straightforward.
This is a deep-concealment and backup piece through and through. It rides in a pocket, a belt pouch, or just about anywhere a full-size handgun won't. It also makes a fun trail companion and a conversation starter at the range. One note from the manufacturer worth knowing: NAA advises against running PMC ammunition through this revolver, so stick with other quality .22 WMR loads.
Yes. NAA machines safety notches into the cylinder between the chambers, so the hammer can rest securely between rounds rather than on a live one. That lets you carry the Pug fully loaded without risk of the hammer contacting a rim. Read the manual and practice setting the hammer in the notch before you carry it that way.
No, this version is chambered for .22 WMR only, and .22 LR cases are a different diameter and won't headspace correctly in the magnum cylinder. If you want both calibers, NAA sells convertible models with a swappable .22 LR cylinder. For this Pug, stick with .22 Magnum, and note that NAA specifically advises against using PMC ammunition in it.
Like all NAA mini revolvers, the Pug loads by removing the base pin and taking the cylinder out of the frame. You load your five rounds, reinsert the cylinder, and lock the pin back in place. The base pin also doubles as an ejector for pushing out spent cases. It's slower than a swing-out cylinder, but it's simple and reliable.
Two big upgrades: sights and grip. The Pug wears an XS white dot front sight that's much faster to pick up than the small fixed sights on standard minis, and its slightly oversized pebble-textured rubber grip gives your hand a lot more to work with. It also carries a 1 inch heavy barrel, giving it that stubby profile the model is named for.
