There's a lot to like about a short bolt gun in 6.5 Creedmoor, and the Mossberg Patriot Carbine gets the formula right. The 18-inch medium bull barrel is threaded 5/8"-24 and comes with a protective cap installed, so adding a can or muzzle brake takes about thirty seconds. Sure, you give up a little velocity compared to a 22 or 24 inch tube, but 6.5 Creedmoor still carries plenty of energy for deer and hogs at practical hunting distances, and what you gain in maneuverability is worth it. At 38.25 inches overall, this rifle gets in and out of a truck, a blind, or thick timber without fighting you the whole way.
Mossberg built this one around their proven Patriot action with a spiral-fluted bolt and oversized handle that runs smooth and fast, even with gloves on. The LBA trigger is the sleeper feature here. It's user adjustable from 2 to 7 pounds, so you can dial in a crisp, light pull for precision work or keep it heavier for cold-weather hunts. The receiver wears a factory-installed Picatinny rail, which means mounting a scope is straightforward with whatever rings you already have. Add the recessed match crown and a 1:8 twist that stabilizes heavy 140-class bullets, and you've got a rifle that punches well above its price point on paper.
Here's where the short barrel really shines. Thread on a suppressor and this Patriot Carbine ends up roughly the same length as a standard unsuppressed hunting rifle, instead of turning into an unwieldy pole. The medium bull profile adds a little weight up front that steadies your hold, while the black synthetic stock shrugs off rain, mud, and bumps season after season. Feeding comes from a detachable drop box magazine holding five rounds, with one more in the chamber. Whether it's your first bolt gun, a dedicated deer rifle, or the host for your new can, this one is set up to work hard from day one.
Yes, the 18-inch medium bull barrel is threaded 5/8"-24 TPI, which is the standard pattern for most 6.5mm and .30 caliber suppressors and muzzle brakes. A protective thread cap comes installed from the factory, so the muzzle stays clean until you're ready to mount a device.
You'll lose some velocity compared to a 22 or 24 inch barrel, typically in the neighborhood of 100 to 150 fps depending on the load. For deer-sized game inside 400 yards or so, that difference is not something you'll notice in the field. The tradeoff is a much handier rifle that balances well with a suppressor attached.
Yes. The receiver comes with a Picatinny rail already installed on top, so all you need is a set of rings sized for your scope tube. Since the rifle ships without iron sights, plan on setting up an optic before heading to the range.
It is. The Patriot Carbine uses Mossberg's patented LBA (Lightning Bolt Action) trigger, which the user can adjust from roughly 2 to 7 pounds of pull weight. It breaks clean with minimal creep, and being able to set it to your preference is a nice touch at this level.
